I think you have some confusion here. You can install the Windowed GalCiv and the Full-Screen GalCiv together in the same directory. It's two seperate .exe files and they don't hurt each other. Of course, you can also install on two different PCs or two different partitions but you don't HAVE to if you don't want to. The Windowed version runs in a fixed 1024x768 window. If your resolution is better, it will just not fill the whole screen, leaving you with some desktop area visible.

Thanks for the reply. Regarding #1 - I just went back and re-read the whole section, and it now makes a bit more sense. But what I'd really like to know is how the number of shields (the X+Y) was derived. Did I get the bonus from my buildings? The starbases? The technology? Like I said, when I tried to figure out all the elements I was aware of, I resulted in different numbers than the actual ones. #9 - the bogus exchanges seem to have some game effect. I once got the A
First, a disclaimer: I don't speak for Stardock, and the following is my observation only. Buying the game directly earns the devs more cash up-front. But - only you and they will ever know about it. However, if more people buy retail, this will encourage stores to stock it in quantities, which will expose the game to a larger audience, which in turn will generate more revenue. Don't underestimate the herd effect ("hey, the store says it sells so fast they can't keep it in
Forgot some things: 10. Is there a limit to the number of modules that can fit on a starbase? How do you tell how much space do you have left? 11. The PDF manual is a joke. Resolution is too low to read, and you can't perform a search because it's a scanned image. Yuck.
Played my first couple of games yesterday. I've been banging my head over some of the game aspects: 1. On the planet production screen, is there any way to tell where the bonuses come from? I mean, I see like +5, but no breakdown of how this number was derived. Is it due to Civ bonuses, technology, starbases, or what? I try to sum up the known factors myself and don't some up with the same numbers. 2. Tactical map. I could swear I pressed SOMETHING and got a neat small tac
The game advances to the next turn automatically when all ships have moved. You can turn off this feature after the game has started in the settings dialog.

I think that for every poster to a message board, there are 10 people who just lurk. Brad, I think you deserve at least some of the credit for the game's "instant" popularity - your posts here and on usenet (.strategic) must have reached a greater audience than you realized. I take back some of the rotten things I said about SDCentral. I still don't like it, but it seems to be getting its job done. Main game loaded and installed, multimedia 40% and running. I'm keeping my fingers cr
This is what I've been requesting from the start. One big .exe HTTP or FTP download, WITH d/l resume option. GetRight comes in very handy in situations like this. SDCentral can then be used for BonusPak, patches, add-ons, and all other neat things AFTER you're got the game.
28, will be 29 by the time GalCiv finally completes the download :notsure:
I second what Matt is saying. There is a difference in mentality here. Stardock intends to rely on SDCentral as a "home base" for all their S/W and games, past present and future. I just want GalCiv. Standalone. I couldn't care less about your AOL-like online community, or any of your Windows skin-enhancing products. Give me a reliable, resuming, standard download server (HTTP or FTP) that I can link into using reliable S/W I already have, and I'll be satisfied.
I think SDCentral MUST have the option to automatically resume after timeout. I cannot sit at the keyboard for the 24+ hours it will take to download the game waiting for the timeout popup message to appear so I can press "resume". Nothing is more frustrating than leaving your computer on and connected all night only to come in the morning to see it has timed out 2 minutes after you've gone to sleep.
MoO3 never had a demo. It was a pirated internal beta build that escaped and even managed to get included in a CD distributed by a gaming magazine. The company never endorced this "demo", it's not publicly available, and no feedback was gathered from it.
I think we need a highest-score list, not just a running score. If I understand correctly, the current Metaverse keeps track of who plays GalCiv the most, not who plays GalCiv best.
34. You've read and understood all the above statements.

Forgot one thing: my system's location is set to Israel. Just a wild guess - perhaps the installer targets different servers depending on your machine's location, and Israel just isn't on the maps? That would explain why it did not create several important keys on this PC, while the same installer installed fine on another PC set to US location. ~SDC~
I finally got SDC to run. I did it by installing it on a different machine (Win2000) and copying the registry keys to my machine. Apparently, the installer on my system did not create the following keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Stardock\ComponentManager\ - Exe (value: sdcentral.exe) - Server Address (value: http://sdcentral.stardock.com/ - Server Name (value: US - Atlanta) It did create the Key folder itself, and some of the values (Default, Path and Versio
I finally managed to get SDC to work, but it was a rough ride. I'll post a reply to my own thread "Stardock Central installation woes" explaining how I did it, in case someone else runs into the same problem. Stardock support were no help. I e-mailed them all the info, and got an automated reply saying my e-mail contained only attachments and was promptly deleted. I guess it was because the e-mail was in HTML and I embedded the log files as attachments. ~SDC~
