[WIP] OpticNerve's Race Portraits

Oooh pikturz!

http://theopticnerve.deviantart.com

So I've been working on some new race portraits for Sins. I'm planning (hopefully) on having two sets for each race, a male and female option for players to choose from since variety is always a good thing. Here's what I have so far:

TEC - Male

Advent - Male: WIP

Vasari - Male: WIP

Hopefully I'll get the male pack done somewhat soon for those interested in using them and get started on the female pack. Just thinking about how I'm going to draw up a female Vasari is already giving me a headache...

Thanks for the all the feedback :]

Sorry, been a bit busy the past few days, but I finally had some free time to work on the Advent some more:

Unfortunately this is sort of a learning experience for me, so it's taking a bit longer to whip out a completed avatar than I'd hope. But I'm sure that once I get down the methods involved, I'll be able to pump out more race portraits quickly. It also doesn't help that I'm pretty picky and self-critical of my own stuff :P

Thanks and yeah, I know that a majority of the Advent Coalescences are female but from reading the manual, it just said that they "dominated" them so I figured that meant there would be some male Advent in the Coalescences, as rare as they would be :]

I've started on the Vasari portrait, but that one was a pain to work with cause when I showed it to some online friends, they said it either looked too much like a Protoss or like something from Mass Effect (which I've yet to play sadly. May 6th can't come soon enough). In the end, I just said to hell with it and will probably stick with the this one since I like how it turned out regardless of what other sci-fi game he looks like he came from:

How about you give credit to the artist instead of copyright infringement?

Great art, but... I don't see the TEC having such technological doohickeys on them. That seems more like an advent thing.

Uh okay:

2008 copyright OpticNerve

I'm pretty sure these all are original artwork since well... I drew them. If you think I stole them from whatever artist, please do link whatever you think I stole from.

In fact, I'll do you one better. Since I've learnt that it's always better to have multiple saves when working with Photoshop, I'll just upload all the steps I've made along the way for each drawing.

TEC -

The first one's pretty far in because I worked at a long stretch and forgot to save earlier.

Advent -

AH! You're from dA!
I thought I recognized the name.
Also, good work with the pictures...
Just for your information, the Vasari are an all male race (wow... no fun) and stuff...

I really sometimes wish I have moderator privileges, for banning you for this comment would be my pleasure.

Accusing an artist of plagiarism without any evidence at all is the lowest one can do.

You should apologize to TheOpticNerve for that. :(

@TheOpticNerve

Great work!

Though I have to agree with Chasington, the TEC one seems to be a bit too high tech. Though imho it would work great for a pirate. :)

I always imagined the TEC as 19th century Prussians, issuing orders with a fake German accent.

But that's probably just me. ;)

Also the steps towards the final picture is very interesting, especially for someone artistic-impaired like me. Makes one appreciate the work gone into such a picture much more. :)

I must agree, smacking an artist that I have seen active before by saying it's stolen work is a personal insult... How would you feel if you released an artwork that was in a national museum and suddenly have someone tell you that you're copying the work? What kind of crap is that?

"19th Century Prussians, issuing orders with a fake German accent."
.... lol...

Well, the inspiration for the TEC one I drew up was a combination of the 2nd and 3rd TEC avatars (the bald-headed guy with the mechanical eyepatch/eye and the one with the little metal skullcap) along with the pirate one with the mechanical jaw. My reasoning (or excuse?) was that if pirates had the tech to replace bodyparts with robotics or machinery, why wouldn't a TEC veteran/once-trader? Considering that the TEC in general is a military coalition converted from a Trade Order, I thought that the commanders would sort of reflect that. That someone who was a trader with experience (as reflected by his missing bodyparts/inserted machinery) would sort of be valuable and that experienced "standard" captains of fleets wouldn't just pop up in droves considering how last minute the TEC came to be.

But I completely understand where you're getting at since the TEC one looks different from the default ones for that race. I might end up duplicating his avatar to the Pirates since I could see it working for both. Just wanted to add something a bit different from the default avatars but also try to keep a bit of lore with it. Due to a lack of campaign, it's a bit hard to sort of "lock down" on the culture behind all the races and everyone has their own idea of how each race is handled. I personally saw the TEC as a sort of last-minute melting pot and cluster**** of traders and humans banding together to survive a double onslaught, so that the ships and captains would sort of reflect that. That not every captain would be refined, and look like he was born for the role but that some were forced to lead else they faced extinction. Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it ...and please, I don't want to redraw another TEC avatar lol :D

The good news is that I do plan on drawing up a more standard TEC avatar later since my friend would like to see an avatar of Stalin with a robotic eye...

The Vasari are an all male race (wow... no fun) and stuff...

W-what? Are they insect-like where there's a big fat queen who lays thousands of eggs or something? Damn, I had an idea of what I wanted to draw for a female Vasari too...

Although I really actually want to see the female vasari, yes, the vasari are all male. They reproduce using genetic engineering/cloning. Yeah, it's in the lore and in the manual...
Although if you've seen my dA page (which is also asianmaster939... lol easier to remember) there's a wallpaper that says... "Break with theory" Let's just say they decided to have some fun (lol wink-nudge) and revived a female from... I dunno if they ever existed, so let's just say that they made their own (although an all male race would probably completely screw it up... lol a penis on a supposed female .... wow instant turn off)

EDIT: Maybe I should omit that part... giving myself too much of a laugh
EDIT: STALIN WITH MECHANICAL RED EYE!!! In Soviet Russia, Stalin looks at YOU!!! Or in this case, In Soviet Russia, Stalin draws YOU!!!

The fact that they're genetically engineered / cloned does not make them an all male race, just an fyi.

Like another race from another sci-fi, after many years of genetic alteration and cloning, the genome breaks down and characteristics which separate male and female are eroded. In lamen terms, they're asexual.

If you're up to drawing some more after you get done, Optic, I'd like to see a more refined TEC avatar. You know the usual clean-cut military style, a younger male in uniform, maybe throw in a beret for flavor? :P
