Galactic Civilizations II: Known Issues / How to get support

Galactic Civilizations II: Known Issues / How to get support

Read this please

If you are having problems installing from the CD-ROMs, try copying the files from the CDs to your hard drive and then run the installation from your hard drive.  If you are having problems activating GalCiv2, please read this sticky post:

https://forums.galciv2.com/122873

If you have any other problems installing or activating GalCiv2 and you can't find an answer in a sticky post, please e-mail support@stardock.com

With all the hardware and configurations out there, it's inevitable that some people are going to run into a problem.  The most important thing to bear in mind that if something is happening for you, it may not be happening for anyone else. Our job is to do our best to make sure the game works perfectly for you.

When you have a problem, the best tools you have is the debug.err that is in the GalCiv2 directory. It will tell us virtually everything we need.  In addition, you can install Smart Exception from Stardock Central (see downloads section here) from the "free stuff" in Stardock Central. If you have that running and GalCiv II crashes or something, it will create a file that will tell us exactly where.

So that we're on the same page - the game should never crash on you. As far as we know, there are zero crash bugs in Galactic Civilizations II.

The first thing to always do is to make sure you have the latest version of the game.

#1 Game crashes immediately.

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: Running your desktop at below 1024x768 or running your desktop in 16-bit color.  This resolves 99% of users.  Check your debug.err and make sure you're not running at some really low resolution.

#2 Game crashes randomly while playing!

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: People with older video drivers. We weren't kidding, you MUST HAVE A RECENT (past year) set of video drivers. If you don't, the game will crash randomly. The readme says this. The stickies say this. We're not kidding around here. You must update your video drivers. Ignoring all that and running into the forum and saying "How could they ship this piece of #$@#!" is not going to update your video driver. You must update the video driver.

Ex: If you're running the nvidia 81.95 drivers, update them to 81.98 or better.

You also absolutely must be running at 1024x768 or higher. That means both X and Y must be equal to or greater than those two numbers.

Next most common cause: People who have eliminated their page file or have a very small page file.  That's your virtual memory.  Check the debug.err and near the top it will say how much virtual memory you have allocated. If it's less than a gig (heck, nowadays you should have at least 2 gigs for virtual memory) then there's your problem.

Next most common cause: Overheating. The game's 3D engine has no polygon count limit, no texture limit. It's designed so that even 2 years from now, you can with mods plug in advanced textures. Some modders have already put in ships from popular sci-fi movies that have over a million polygons and it works.  But it comes at a cost: Your video cards are fully utilized. And that can translate to heat.  This mostly affects people who have built their own machines and thrown in a powerful video card.  Version 1.0X (and later) support GPU throttling which should solve this.

Next most common cause: People with AMD64 Dual Core who haven't updated their chipset drivers. GO here, get your drivers, play game, have fun.

#3 You lose your mouse pointer

People with nVidia Geforce 6X series cards (for the most part) have reported this. We have yet to get it in our internal lab and it doesn't seem to be that wide spread but it's a real show stopper.  The solution is to use the hardware mouse cursor which is in the video options area of the game.

OTHER TIPS:

Read the stickies! Post your debug.err.  Or at the very least tell us what kind of computer you have (though debug.err will tell us all about your computer).

For more troubleshooting tips, please read this sticky:

Looks like someone else here has a similar debug.err, but I'll post mine anyways. I've tried everything I can think of, but I have to be missing something...

Update your video drivers; nVidia's Vista release drivers are horribly buggy. Grab a driver version 101.41 or higher from laptopvideo2go.com or your laptop manufacturer's website and you should be set.

I'd also very strongly advise updating the game to the latest version. 1.2 is positively ancient.

I'm not sure which driver to download... does it matter if you have a ge force go 7600 7800 or 950? my virsion is 7.15.0010.9759 I don't see that series anywhere on laptopvideo2go.com?

I've got SDC, and downloaded the updates long ago. When I start GC2, the start up screen says v1.5, and GC2:DA starts up w/ 1.80g. Is there a newer version? If so what do I look for on SDC?

No, that's the latest for each (1.5 DL and 1.8 DA).

I tried to install the driver from that page, (after I un-installed the old driver) Now windows is telling me there are no compatable drivers to install? I recall seeing this in the posts but I couldn't find them back to see how to get around this.

There are a lot of potential variations in the card name identifiers, so the guys over at laptopvideo2go.com might have missed the one used by yours. In that case, just ask for help with getting the drivers to work over on their forums and they should be able to get you updated.

I'm currently having an issue starting up the game. I'm also having issues trying to register - but I'm working with support on that.

This is the error I've got from the error file.

Try updating your video drivers. The ones you've got are almost a year old.
According to the Nvidia website, that is the latest one?

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_169.21_whql.html

Well, at least the driver dates are the same.

Ninja edit: I do remember having some issue updating drivers a while ago. When I updated my other games wouldn't work and I would get an error saying my N_4 driver has stopped functioning. Reverting to the older drivers solved the problems and other games worked. I asked about that - but never got anywhere with it.
You have 158.19 installed, a bit different from 169 (or the 174 beta).
Updating drivers did nothing.

The screen is black and the mouse cursor is there for a bit - but then it all just freezes up and I have to reset.

Hi I just got a new machine with Vista 32bit. I tried installing GC2 Gold Edition but I kept getting a windows error message so I decided to download Stardock and try it that way. I downloaded the game and it was installed. When I try to launch the game this is what I get...

gc2launch.exe has stopped working

I can't upgrade to GC2 Gold Edition 1.6 because the game needs to launch to do so and it can't. I have the latest nvidia drivers and vista updates. I would like to have this problem resolved asap so I can purchase twilight of the arnor and enjoy gc2 once again. Thank you for your time.
If the launcher just isn't working (which there can be a variety of reasons for), you can simply grab Stardock Central from the downloads page linked at left, and use it to register and update the game (All the Updates button in the launcher would do is run SDC). You should be able to run the game directly without the launcher, so just update your shortcuts to point at GalCiv2.exe and GC2DarkAvatar.exe and you should be fine.
Thanks for the advice and I followed it. I can't update GC2 Gold Edition through StarDock and I wish to update to 1.6 When I try to update it ask for my seriel number and when I enter it I get the message "can't update account information". Does this have to do with the fact that I own GC2 Gold Edition? Dark Avatar is fine I can inpute my seriel number and have it recognized and all but not with my GC2. Please help because I want to get Twilight of the Arnor soon. Thank you.
If you have GC2 Gold you should be able to register it as both DA and GC2 separately. If you're having trouble doing so, contact support@stardock.com and they can get you fixed up.

I'm having a problem with GC2:DA 1.80e and the Enhanced Ship Rendering option. If it is turned on, I'm having random edge bleading from various points on ships. If turned off, they are gone. I've tried updating drivers, changing all the settings for texture and anti-alashing and texture clamping but nothing seems to solve it.

1.80g is the latest, though it's unlikely to help this (it's mainly for the pathfinding issues, IIRC). In any case, if your video is not playing well with enhanced rendering, the simple solution is to just play with it off--that is why it's optional, after all :)
True enough at that, Kryo... but there is a BIG difference in the quality of the ship textures and I would have thought an nVida 6100 with 256mb on board ram would be enough to handle it. *sigh* everything else works great... but maybe I'm just reaching the limit of my 5 year old computer that I just can't seem to retire lol!

Yes, been running the game without the enhanced ship rendering... but you know. If there is a bell or whistle one has to try to get it to make a sound!

Just for the books, not all ships have this issue, only about half. The rest seem to be perfect... I wonder if it is something with the texture itself rather then the rendering proccess.  :NOTSURE:  And if putting together the ship from jewelry, only certain pieces give this same issue. :NOTSURE:

Well, enhanced rendering shouldn't actually look any different, it's just a speed boost (for machines that can properly handle it, anyway) implemented in an early DA patch. The textures themselves are the same either way.

heres my debug err. its a big long though, would appreciate any help with fixing this

You need to post a debug from one of them, then. The one you posted is a positively ancient debug from the base game.

Hmmm, if they are suppose to be the same.... something must be wrong on my end.  :NOTSURE:  Going to do a full remove using driver cleaner pro then do a re-install of the vid-drivers tonight. Will let you know if anything changes.

*grumbles... had to install vista didn't I....*

Ok, back again. Seems even with the new drivers, same distortion exists in the exact same spots... and if I run without the advanced rendering, the texture on the ships appear less vivid, more washed out then if the advanced rendering is turned on. When it is turned on, the jewelry seems to have much more color depth and detail giving it a much richer and more 3D appearance.

I'm really wondering what the 'speed patch' does and why my system seems to have a more vivid rendering with it on when it's only suppose to speed up the rendering proccess.  :NOTSURE:

Also tried an uninstall of the game (and stardock with it) and re-install just to see if it was an installation issue, but no change. Tried a few different ship texture mods that are out. Interestingly enough, the mods don't seem to have this issue with the distortion in the texture, only the default jewelry.

I'm wondering if I get the TotA expantion if this issue will still be there, if the jewelry textures will be the same with the advanced rendering off... or if the new patches coming out may take this issue out without wondering anymore about it! lol

On a positive note, I did try the game on my laptop with an older video card (gForce 440go) and found the textures DO stay the same with or without the advanced rendering. Also remember a few mentions about the nVida gForce 6200 cards having issues in the past with this game in a few other threads until nVida fixed an issue with a driver so I'm thinking it's something to do with the card's GPU not liking the game or the way the game renders the textures.
