Galactic Civilizations II: Known Issues / How to get support

Galactic Civilizations II: Known Issues / How to get support

Read this please

If you are having problems installing from the CD-ROMs, try copying the files from the CDs to your hard drive and then run the installation from your hard drive.  If you are having problems activating GalCiv2, please read this sticky post:

https://forums.galciv2.com/122873

If you have any other problems installing or activating GalCiv2 and you can't find an answer in a sticky post, please e-mail support@stardock.com

With all the hardware and configurations out there, it's inevitable that some people are going to run into a problem.  The most important thing to bear in mind that if something is happening for you, it may not be happening for anyone else. Our job is to do our best to make sure the game works perfectly for you.

When you have a problem, the best tools you have is the debug.err that is in the GalCiv2 directory. It will tell us virtually everything we need.  In addition, you can install Smart Exception from Stardock Central (see downloads section here) from the "free stuff" in Stardock Central. If you have that running and GalCiv II crashes or something, it will create a file that will tell us exactly where.

So that we're on the same page - the game should never crash on you. As far as we know, there are zero crash bugs in Galactic Civilizations II.

The first thing to always do is to make sure you have the latest version of the game.

#1 Game crashes immediately.

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: Running your desktop at below 1024x768 or running your desktop in 16-bit color.  This resolves 99% of users.  Check your debug.err and make sure you're not running at some really low resolution.

#2 Game crashes randomly while playing!

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: People with older video drivers. We weren't kidding, you MUST HAVE A RECENT (past year) set of video drivers. If you don't, the game will crash randomly. The readme says this. The stickies say this. We're not kidding around here. You must update your video drivers. Ignoring all that and running into the forum and saying "How could they ship this piece of #$@#!" is not going to update your video driver. You must update the video driver.

Ex: If you're running the nvidia 81.95 drivers, update them to 81.98 or better.

You also absolutely must be running at 1024x768 or higher. That means both X and Y must be equal to or greater than those two numbers.

Next most common cause: People who have eliminated their page file or have a very small page file.  That's your virtual memory.  Check the debug.err and near the top it will say how much virtual memory you have allocated. If it's less than a gig (heck, nowadays you should have at least 2 gigs for virtual memory) then there's your problem.

Next most common cause: Overheating. The game's 3D engine has no polygon count limit, no texture limit. It's designed so that even 2 years from now, you can with mods plug in advanced textures. Some modders have already put in ships from popular sci-fi movies that have over a million polygons and it works.  But it comes at a cost: Your video cards are fully utilized. And that can translate to heat.  This mostly affects people who have built their own machines and thrown in a powerful video card.  Version 1.0X (and later) support GPU throttling which should solve this.

Next most common cause: People with AMD64 Dual Core who haven't updated their chipset drivers. GO here, get your drivers, play game, have fun.

#3 You lose your mouse pointer

People with nVidia Geforce 6X series cards (for the most part) have reported this. We have yet to get it in our internal lab and it doesn't seem to be that wide spread but it's a real show stopper.  The solution is to use the hardware mouse cursor which is in the video options area of the game.

OTHER TIPS:

Read the stickies! Post your debug.err.  Or at the very least tell us what kind of computer you have (though debug.err will tell us all about your computer).

For more troubleshooting tips, please read this sticky:

The popup is because the secondary display is set to 640x480. Do you have a TV connected to the computer, or have in the past? Disabling the secondary output or using a higher resolution on it would eliminate that warning.
My desktop has never been connected to a tv, and I have no idea where to find a secondary display to change that.
Right click on your desktop, choose Properties, and go to the Settings tab in that window. If that screen shows two displays, click on the one with a '2' (should be the smaller of the two) and uncheck the 'extend my windows desktop onto this monitor' box below.

Two weird ones that I'm noticing (Except for lots of crashes on my laptop, but it's a POS, so I'm not surprised.) - neither is a major crash.bug, so I don't know how to submit a report:

1.) Phantom ships. Some times when I destroy a fleet, one enemy ship will remain. It's there, I can click on it - but it never moves, and I can move my ships over it.

2.) This is the weird one, and I notice it more on the laptop with the older hardware: bottom right corner is a memory dead-zone. If I have that region centered on the screen, movements take longer to process, ships take forever to click, turns don't cycle...but move away from there, and it's all cool. This has happened in a few games.

Neither of these issues is crippling, but I wanted to mention them.

I'm having a CTD problem when I use a custom tech tree. I can run the game fine with no mods. When I use the TotA tech tree editor to change just one value of the artificial gravity of the MinorRace (from 50 to a 10), I get a CTD after I select everything in a new game and click next to create galaxy. I've updated video drivers, and enabled mods as proper (checked 3 ways to sunday). Crash happens if I put the edited file in the mod folder, or the game data folder (original data was preserved). Here is the debug file:

>File edited/removed<
Problem solved from another post. The tech tree editor saved adamantium as requiring adamantiumII for the required tech (not me, I swear), causing a crash. Changed that to duralthene as it should be, and all worked fine. Problem solved, thanks Evil Roy!

This problem doesn't cause a SmartException crash, it just stops working during the middle of a game. I have installed/checked installed the lastest video and sound drivers and I am at a lose, help please.

The debug shows a normal exit (you need to get it right after a problem occurs), but just looking at that first line points out a potential problem... you're running a positively ancient version of the game. Update to 1.5 right away via SDC and that may well solve your issue.

hey folks...
I'm new at this "Computer" stuff, but about the time I switched over to a new graphics card, Gal Civ II stopped working,

The cards an Nvidia 86 somethin or other, and I'm currently running in 1280 by 1000 something pixles, but my game crashes whever I run the darn thing.

Looks like one of the game's interface files has become corrupted. A reinstall should sort it, and I'd strongly advise updating the game to the latest version while you're at it.

I bought this game quite some time ago (played the demo, promptly followed by purchasing it shortly after)

I have formatted a couple times since I last played it and have installed a new HDD and I get an error message when I try to play it stating:

"The product appears to be validated but the serial number or the machine SID don't match."

Is there any way to resynchronize them?

Just delete the sig.bin file from the game's folder, then run the game and reactivate.

cheers for that. :CONGRAT:

I typed in my code and it told me to go to some site about the italian version (due to it have 3 less digits), turns out i missed a couple because mines australian (well, I'm australian anyway).

but thanks so much for that been having an urge to play this game for the last couple of days...and now I can! :HOT:

I bought GalCiv II ages ago, but never got around to really checking it out. I have a Vista machine, I downloaded through Impulse, but when I click Run I immediately get an error message.

I've updated my video drivers to a May 2008 version, and I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the entire game. I get the same error launching via shortcut or through Impulse, even with "Run as Administrator" Any thoughts?

There could be a number of reasons the launcher might crash (anti-virus, MSXML out of date, etc). The simplest solution is to just run the game's exe directly instead of using the launcher. Just browse to the game's folder in explorer to find it (GalCiv2.exe, GC2DarkAvatar.exe, GC2TwilightoftheArnor.exe), and update your shortcuts accordingly.

I just bought twilight of the arnor today (or yesterday I guess) and while it isn't impossible to play, I've had 3 random crashes; the first 2 were in the first mission of the campaign trying to research large scale building, then I found this thread and updated my video card drivers. I got about 2 hours of uninterrupted play, but then it just crashed for no apparent reason. what did I do to it this time?

I can't find the debug file, but I just downloaded smart exception, so I;ll see if I can reproduce the error.

I'm running a Gateway GT5058 with an added nvidia 7600GS graphics card (XP media center 05, amd athelon 3800+, and 2 gigs of RAM.

You would need to post the debug right after the crash to be sure (this one shows the game was closed normally), but it's quite possible as the Radeon 7000 is a DirectX 7 card (The game requires a DX9 card, can run with a DX8 card, but below that it's iffy). It probably doesn't help that, as best I can tell, the 7000 doesn't have hardware T&L support like the other 7000 cards do, which the game does need.

DA and TA do use a new engine which may not work on older systems. If you check the prefs.ini file in notepad (it'll be in My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor), you may try disabling the enhanced ship rendering option in there and giving it another shot.

i've changed it, but it didn't work.i'll try to change my video card and see what happens.i'd really want to play this great game, few of it's kind are out there :(.sry for the disturbance and my bad english.
