With all the hardware and configurations out there, it's inevitable that some people are going to run into a problem.  The most important thing to bear in mind that if something is happening for you, it may not be happening for anyone else. Our job is to do our best to make sure the game works perfectly for you.

When you have a problem, the best tools you have is the debug.err that is in the GalCiv2 directory. It will tell us virtually everything we need.  In addition, you can install Smart Exception from Stardock Central (see downloads section here) from the "free stuff" in Stardock Central. If you have that running and GalCiv II crashes or something, it will create a file that will tell us exactly where.

So that we're on the same page - the game should never crash on you. As far as we know, there are zero crash bugs in Galactic Civilizations II.

The first thing to always do is to make sure you have the latest version of the game.

#1 Game crashes immediately.

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: Running your desktop at below 1024x768 or running your desktop in 16-bit color.  This resolves 99% of users.  Check your debug.err and make sure you're not running at some really low resolution.

#2 Game crashes randomly while playing!

Happens to approximately 0.5% of users.

Most common cause: People with older video drivers. We weren't kidding, you MUST HAVE A RECENT (past year) set of video drivers. If you don't, the game will crash randomly. The readme says this. The stickies say this. We're not kidding around here. You must update your video drivers. Ignoring all that and running into the forum and saying "How could they ship this piece of #$@#!" is not going to update your video driver. You must update the video driver. 

Ex: If you're running the nvidia 81.95 drivers, update them to 81.98 or better.

You also absolutely must be running at 1024x768 or higher. That means both X and Y must be equal to or greater than those two numbers.

Next most common cause: People who have eliminated their page file or have a very small page file.  That's your virtual memory.  Check the debug.err and near the top it will say how much virtual memory you have allocated. If it's less than a gig (heck, nowadays you should have at least 2 gigs for virtual memory) then there's your problem. 

Next most common cause: Overheating. The game's 3D engine has no polygon count limit, no texture limit. It's designed so that even 2 years from now, you can with mods plug in advanced textures. Some modders have already put in ships from popular sci-fi movies that have over a million polygons and it works.  But it comes at a cost: Your video cards are fully utilized. And that can translate to heat.  This mostly affects people who have built their own machines and thrown in a powerful video card.  Version 1.0X (and later) support GPU throttling which should solve this.

Next most common cause: People with AMD64 Dual Core who haven't updated their chipset drivers. GO here, get your drivers, play game, have fun.

#3 You lose your mouse pointer

People with nVidia Geforce 6X series cards (for the most part) have reported this. We have yet to get it in our internal lab and it doesn't seem to be that wide spread but it's a real show stopper.  The solution is to use the hardware mouse cursor which is in the video options area of the game.

OTHER TIPS:

Read the stickies! Post your debug.err.  Or at the very least tell us what kind of computer you have (though debug.err will tell us all about your computer).

Just bought, installed and updated Galactic Civilizations II Gold, and I went to play the campaign for Dread Lords. When I got to the Main Map screen, only stars had actual graphics: Everything else (ships, planets, anomolies, etc) was being reperesented by icons only, no matter how close I zoomed.


Turn the 'tactical zoom view level' slider back down in the options. It determines what zoom level the view swtiches betweem 3D models and icons at.

Saxon, what's the problem, what were you doing when it happened, etc? A debug alone isn't that useful without any context.

It just crashes randomly in the game. Usually, I'll be playing, and then half the screen will start flickering and I'll lose my cursor, or I'll just get a critical-error message and the game will close. For a while there, I was also losing my saved game, but that seems to have stopped. It's been somewhat inconsistent. Is it a graphics-card problem?

Now that I've updated DA to the latest version, it crashes as soon as I load a game.

Yeah, I just gave it a whirl again. The game loaded, and then seconds later, the screen went dark except for my cursor. Then I got a Windows error message saying the program encountered an error and needed to close. Here's the debug:

That should be just fine. You'll probably need to get updated video drivers though from nvidia's website (or laptopvideo2go.com if it's a laptop).

I am not sure if this is where to post about Twilight of Arnor but I will do it anyway.

So I was messing around and building a Colony ship that looks a bit like a City and I added a really nice turbine like thing to look like engines and then animated it. So I kept adding more things to it but eventually when I add something it messes up graphically now. I have only jewelry on the ship at the moment with no functional parts. I am using the cargo hull that is just the generic cube shape. So I am wondering is there a limit on the amount of items that can be placed onto a ship? I noticed that the first thing that would happen is the colors would get messed up on the ship and if I ignored it and placed more pieces after another one or two anything new would be invisible. Oddly enough the hard points still there and I could place more items on still. I am more then happy to send a copy of the ship to somebody here to take a look at if it helps trouble shoot the game. I know it is still in beta but I want to make sure that if this is a bug it is brought to the attention of the developers.

I'm using a GeForce 7300 GT AGP video card in DVI mode. My CPU is an AMD Sempron 3100+ at 1.8G. My problem occurs when I try to start the game. I had previously set the game to 640X480 and it started, but the options were all stacked on top of one another. I changed the reolution to 1280x1024 and tried to start the game again. The intro came up with the movie, but when it changed to the main menu, (it appeared to be in the resolution I selected) none of the buttons worked, I couldn't start the game, couldn't exit the game, nothing. I updated to ver 1.5 and it came up in a window and had the same problem.

P.S. I can't find the prefs.ini file.

I'm nost sure how you got it set to 640x480 if you can't find the prefs.ini file (that should never even be an option in-game, as 1024x768 is the minimum), but you can reset everything by deleting the prefs file. You'll find it in My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2 or My Documents\My Games\GC2DarkAvatar (depending which it is you're using).

The problem you're having is caused by a video driver bug. Get the latest nVidia drivers from your laptop manufacturer; if they don't have anything at least version 101.41 or higher, then check laptopvideo2go.com instead.

I'm actually having a similar problem to the guy above me. I just received my copy of the game today, started playing happily for a good six hours and built up my empire then the game froze when I have a turn or two. I had to ctrl+alt+del and close the program. I'm able to create a new game if I like and start building again, but I haven't played the new scenario for more than ten mins (just wanted to see if the error was due to size of my developed game).

I've pasted the debug.err file below (could you in particular tell me what 'error flipping back to primary buffer' means?).

I am not sure if this is where to post about Twilight of Arnor but I will do it anyway.

So I was messing around and building a Colony ship that looks a bit like a City and I added a really nice turbine like thing to look like engines and then animated it. So I kept adding more things to it but eventually when I add something it messes up graphically now. I have only jewelry on the ship at the moment with no functional parts. I am using the cargo hull that is just the generic cube shape. So I am wondering is there a limit on the amount of items that can be placed onto a ship? I noticed that the first thing that would happen is the colors would get messed up on the ship and if I ignored it and placed more pieces after another one or two anything new would be invisible. Oddly enough the hard points still there and I could place more items on still. I am more then happy to send a copy of the ship to somebody here to take a look at if it helps trouble shoot the game. I know it is still in beta but I want to make sure that if this is a bug it is brought to the attention of the developers.

serenehorizon, You also have the Nvidia driver bug.  You will probably have to go to laptopvideo2go.com and try the drivers there.

DaveyP, please send in a screenshot of what you're seeing with the debug.err, shipcfg and xml files to gc2bugs@stardock.com
