Bonus percentages which aren't percentages

Hi,

Back in GalCiv 1 I had to go through a lot of trouble to understand what the different bonuses were in fact doing. +1% sensor range wasn't a 1% increase in range as most of you probably know by now. This knowledge had to be learned by trial & error.

I've recently bought GalCiv 2 and noticed that for some reason this item hasn't been fixed yet. Different bonuses are very counter-intuitive and some are downright controversial or non-functioning. Why does a 50% economic bonus actually give a 25% increase? What does a 1% soldiering bonus mean? What does .4 range mean? Do I need those extra supplies or not to be able to colonize a neighboring planet? Why doesn't a population growth bonus affect population growth?

I think you know what I mean. I think hard-core gamers are pretty much into the game by now. Why not make the game a bit easier for new-comers...

Why doesn't a population growth bonus affect population growth?

Well, it does. But it is barely spotted due to the cap and the base growth formula:
With 1 billions people, a 20% natural growth per turn reachs the growth cap at 200 millions per turn.

This has changed in the latest beta update.

Yep, pretty much all the annoyances you describe look to be fixed in V1.1, Brad's gone to considerable lengths to make it more transparent.

Well, not quite all. There are still things that are discribed as percentages, such as ship speed, that are blatently not.

Well, I think that's more a case of rounding everything up, so far as I can tell.

it certainly isnt. you get a speed by turn bonus its also explained this way in the text window, just the list displays a percentage based bonus. i also realized this though i must say i had to problem to distuingish between percentage based boni and fixed ones ( sensors speed etc).
the 50% bonus only yielding a 25% increase only applies to research afaik and is also planned to be fixed in 1.1 i think

It's nice to know Stardock is fixing many of the problems.

I guess the only gripe remaining is the use of percentages. I wonder how big a change it would be to simply drop the percentage sign from where it doesn't belong. +1 speed instead of +1% speed...

Hopefully a small leap for programmers, but a huge leap for usability.
