Sick 'n tired of loosing ship designs

Ok, during the game before my last I designed a new constructor, colony ship, freighter, one tiny hull, two medium hull ships and two large hull ships. All designs were ‘empty hulls’ so tech requirements should only be the hull size, right? After designing the empty hulls I used these throughout my game to create several ships per base design as new techs became available.
All these new designs took a considerable amount of time to create.
So imagine the horror when I fired up a new game and found only my new colony ship and freighter design (the empty hulls) in the shipbuilding section. Both constructor and tiny hull designs were not there. As the game progressed and new hull sizes became available NONE of my medium and large designs showed up! This was also true for all the completely outfitted ship designs I made starting from these empty hulls. None of them (even the colony ship and freighter) showed up in the new game.

The files are still in the ship folder. Even in game, when researching a new hull type the tech info mentions the design name, but once researched the design(s) didn’t show up in the shipbuilding section.

Not that this was entirely unexpected. About 90% of all ship designs I have ever made are lost between two games, although the .class and other files are still around.

My conclusion: One must make the balance for any given game. Every game has omissions, bugs, undocumented features and weaknesses, as well as enjoyable features. For me seeing ship design is utterly useless and an absolute waste of time tips the balance in the negative direction since it was one of the (very) few features that made the game stand out (imho).
So I decided to stop playing the game.

Moreover, I cannot help but feeling that I am not the only one with this "make and loose your own ship design" feature.

The 1.1 beta (both the first and second builds) have stopped using the .shipclass file and convert any .shipclass files they find into the xml format.

If you're not comfortable with using betas, you can zip your ships folder up and e-mail it to me at carielf@stardock.com with a description of this bug (so I'll know what I'm supposed to be looking for) and I'll see if I can find anything.

I'll bet it has to do with miniturization, or a tech achievement that doesn't depend on placement of components on a design. It makes it tough to save designs, unless you have no miniturization etc researched.

Hey CariElf , thanks for the response!

I just came home and quickly checked my ships folder. And hey... you're right (of course you are ), they've become xml's!!! *blushes with shame* I didn't check on them since the 1.1 beta.

The problem remains though. I'll take a look and see if I can find something. If not (probably) i'll mail you my ships folder.

Thanks again!

Has anyone had this happen WHILE RUNNING 1.1? I know that the problem persists if bringing ship designs from 1.0x to 1.1, but has anyone reproduced the issue where Upgrading a Design messes the tech values up in the first place.

I've been trying to reproduce, but I can't get the bug to occur, and I'm hoping that the move to XML has fixed the issue.

Silly me. I forgot to mention my game version. I'm still running version 1.0.X

I'll try upgrading to see if that solves the problem.

OK BoogieBac, I started a new game. I will continue with it until I have researched trade, so I can have a colony, constructor and freigter desigen. Then il'll start a new game and see if the new designs show up.

I can tell you right now that I've had problems with 1.0x designs in normal 1.1 games, but they did show up in 1.1 'battle of the gods'.

I'll keep you informed
