STICKY: Getting the game Downloaded!

STICKY: Getting the game Downloaded!

Need help? Here's the place

Hopefully things will go smoothly for you to get the game.  But if not, here's a guide to help you..

First Steps..
When you purchase the game you will receive a link to Stardock Central. Download that.

Make sure you are running 2.29 or later (if you've been running Stardock Central for awhile, double check in the about box that you're not using an old version like 2.24).

Downloading
If you're downloading the game and it's slow, you can try a different server.  From Stardock Central go to tools->Settings and the server is in the "Internet" area.  We have several different servers.

Account Problems
If you used a different email address to purchase the game direct than what you used to create an account here, Stardock Central may get confused. If that happens, email support@stardock.com with the subject "GalCiv Account Issue" and they'll take care of you.  If you receive no response within 1 hour, post here and someone from Stardock will likely see it and take care of you here.

Download Speeds
The core game download speed will be slower than the multimedia/movies/tutorials because those are mirrored.  The core game is regularly updated so we aren't able to mirror it as much.  You should still get pretty decent speeds (and a reminder: try a different server if you find downloading too slow or if you get a time out -- bear in mind, there's a LOT of people downloading the game).

If you have problems related to actually obtaining/installing the game, post them HERE in this thread.

NOTE: Some anti-virus software will cause the installer not to work (i.e. it'll block Stardock Central from extracting/installing the game). If you run into an installation problem, try disabling some of your anti-virus setup temporarily to see if that resolves it.

Earlier today I only saw GalCiv I until the fellow at tech support merged two of my accounts. That's when I started seeing the expansion in the list...but GalCiv II is still not there.

Did you have DL registered on a third account? In any case, if you're still having trouble I'd advise recontacting support (hopefully your ticket is still open).
It's still open. I was hoping there might be an easy fix out here, since I know they're swamped. If I registered under a third email, it boggles my mind what it could be. The other two made sense...but I tend to keep the same email for a long time. I've tried every email I could think of. Ah well, guess it's back to the Oblivion expansion for a while. : )

Check the 'show prerelease versions' option.

FYI it's best to put any sins-related talk in the future over on the sins forums, especially if you have bug reports or things to discuss with other players!

I bought the product, but I am experiencing persistent timeouts whilst trying to donwload aspects of the software. I have tried both servers.

Gubbs, what version of SDC are you running (check the build number in help->about)? You may also try the Refresh XML option in SDC's settings.

its all good. I figured I'd try downloading the expansion pack then try movies and media etc again ..

I'm guessing there aren't any such things for the first game, but when you install the expansion it finds the relevant content ..

been playing all day as it happens.

do find a few thing annoying/uneccessary such as logistics and ship/fleet grouping. it has a knock on effect of making it a pita to get troop ships to their destinations without loosing them - as only later on in the game can you get enough logistic points to get a cruiser/some fighter escorts and a troopship into a fleet.

Oh and if I happen to add a troop module onto a ship of the line or heavy cruiser, if I take the planet, I loose the ship? that doesnt seem very fair ..

finally, ships dont seem to gain experience? part of the joy of similar games is the ability to stay behind technologically, relying on your experienced fleet to deal with technologically superior but green invasions etc.

I also would like to see planetary governors come from a pool. you can hire them and they all have different personalities/skills etc.

Hi.

This might be a silly question, but: since I have now downloaded the 200+ MB of basic gamedata and some of the add-ons (like video and sound) can I from now on (when I reformat my system) use these base files to get the game working again. Or must I download EVERYTHING AGAIN each time I re-install?

Basically I'm worried about bandwidth. Here in South Africa it is very costly, and I want to find out if (from this point forward) I will be able to use the downloaded files that make the game run at the moment to re-install it next time I format.

Is the above correct?

Thanks for a great game, BTW.

You can simply right click on each item in Stardock Central, and choose the archive option. Then navigate to C:\Program Files\Stardock\Stardock Central\BACKUP in explorer and copy the .sdc files there off to a safe place along with a copy of the installer for Stardock Central itself, and you're all backed up.

So reinstall procedure would simply be:

1. Install Stardock
2. Make the backuped files availalbe (on CD or the HD)
3. Use Startdock to 'unarchive' or 'restore' the SDC files content?

Pretty much, yep.

I just bought Dark Avatar for download, but it still shows as PURCHASE in Stardock? Am I missing something? Where's my expansion?

Hi guys; I had pre-ordered TA when it first became available, and then was later informed by SDC that due to a processing/data issue my order had been lost. No biggie, SD was really cool about it and I pre-ordered again.

About the same time the Beta schedule started I got my registration and all my sale information pertaining to my new purchase of TA (and the money out of my account) but...I can't seem to join in on the Beta testing or anything, when I am on SDC it still shows that I can purchase TA even though I already have a registration number and my order number.

Wasn't sure if I should contact sales, SDC, or whatnot, so, here I am.

Thanks!

Did you try registering the serial in sdcentral?

Register the serial you got for it in the tools menu->register products window in SDC. If you bought it with a different email address than you have GC2 and DA registered to (GC2  and DA must be registered on the same account in order to download TA), then you may need to contact support and request an account merge.

thanks netriak and kryo, thats what it was (and Kryo, being born and raised in MI, I know thats its past 730, don't you ever sleep man?

How long is it suppose to take to download and install TA? It's been running for several hours and it's still not done. It didn't take this long for DL and DA to download and install.

Is it looping over and over? If so, make sure to check the show prerelease versions box, then try it.

Any suggestion as to why I can't download the full game using Stardock Central?

Thus far, I was able to download:

GalCiv2: Dread Lords to version 1.50.130
Height Maps to version 1.59.022
Twilight of the Arnor: In progress for version 0.91[b].001

I keep getting the following text for the rest of the downloads:

Download: C:\DOCUME~1\Jay\LOCALS~1\Temp\sdcentral\gc2_Movies.sdc 0 | Attempt: 1 | -18 HTML code was detected within the download

That appears to be the relevant line in the log file. Doesn't matter which server I use, I still get that error message in the log.

I get this message for...

Tutorials
Movies
Multimedia
Dark Avatar (Expansion Pack)

Note: I've had all of these working just perfectly fine before but cannot locate my installation media so I opted to download them since I can.

Any suggestions?

**EDIT for UPDATE**

Well, I found my DA cd and used it to install DA. Now the Stardock Central client will happily update the GC2 applications I listed above that it wouldn't install. Someone might want to check the base installers to make sure that they are okay since I couldn't get them to download / install until I installed DA from the install media. Otherwise, someone could be left in a bind without the physical media.

Something's definitely not right there. Best contact support@stardock.com so they can sort it out.

As I mentioned in the edit, I found my DA install disk and used it. From that point forward, updating worked flawlessly.

It's just for some reason, it was refusing to download those items from scratch. GC2, Height Maps, and TA downloaded without a hitch.

Not sure what support could do for me at this point as I have all of my GC2 stuff fully downloaded / patched (as appropriate) and working.

I'll try a barebone download on my laptop tonight (since it's never had any Stardock / GC / GC2 game on it) assuming I get home from work at a reasonable time. If I run into any problems there, I'll contact support and give them the relevant logs.

Please do. Also we will need the specs of your computer as well. If you like please send us the diag file.

Press and hold the Windows key, press R and type the following into the Run dialog:
dxdiag

Then send in the file along with the rest (if you already knew how to do this sorry for that).

I have pre-ordered TotA but am unable to d/l or install it. I get the install button in SDC for TotA beta. When I press the button, the SDC downoader retries mutliple times to d/l the files, then times out with a Download Failed dialog. I have tried the following to resolve this issue: switching d/l servers (us1 and us2 are my only options), turning off my AVG anti-virus, checked to make sure I have the latest version of SDC (I do), running SDC as Administrator. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Here is my log file: -- [Application] ----------------------------------------------------
