There was a misunderstanding here: I have overwritten an old savegame filename with an newer version file, not continued playing an old version game with the new version. I always start new games when installing a new version, as I did here. I will move the post ASAP, thanks for your answer and "viel Glück in Freiburg!"
After installing the newest version and starting a new game I was quite ecstatic about the new monsters I have found (the escaped juggernaut, the new dragon, fantastic!). But after I returned from breakfast and reloaded the game they were all gone! And all heroes too. The lairs still exist though. Me too. And I had a battle where an AI-catapult "hopped" on one of my heroes when he neared it. I could find his real place (it was invisible there) and attack it when scanning for his probable location with the mouse and waiting for a for a change of the cursor. Perhaps the withdraw a tile animation is bugged? Another catapult bug: I entered a fortress with a lone (produced) catapult in it with a stack of 8 heroes. Next turn the catapult was gone fore
I wondered why in the 50+ games I played so far the magic using factions lost significantly more often than the others. The reason could be autocombat. The other behaviour I noticed too. Unwinable battles against monsters with nonmagic special abilities won via autocombat without a scratch. IMHO, autocombat MUST be corrected before release. I stopped using it completely in my last games even if I had to slay millions of mites by hand and the temptation to cheat
