I'm looking forward to Rome:TW. I've heard big things are planned for the strategic UI, with it all being continuous. That'll be interesting...

Oops, sorry about the double posting. Didn't realise this forum had stickies - thought they were just new posts.
Yet again I was disappointed to check the GalCiv site today and see no mention of a demo. But I was astonished to go to GoneGold to see what was availble, and see this link: http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=10366 Yes, ladies and gents, it's a demo. (Are you Stardock guys keeping this a secret or something?) LOL
I was disappointed (again) today to come onto the GalCiv website to still see no mention of a demo. But I was surprised (but elated) to go onto GoneGold and see this link in their demo section: http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=10366 Much cheering, but as I was eating my dinner at the time and had my mouthful, I sounded like the Incredible Hulk on the morning after the night before. Anyway, downloading now, have fun! (You Stardock guys keeping this a secret or some
Oh, just read again - sometime this week. Cool.
CariElf: Good to know it's on its way. Anychance of an ETA? Thanks
Like I said, I'm sure GalCiv is a great game. But thongor raises an interesting point. "if you are a 4x fan..." Thing is, am I? I don't think so. I just occasionally find a good one (Shogun, basically, though I'm trying to get to grips with EU2. Very complicated though.) and like it.
JK2 is what I meant, not JK3. :p
I don't stick to this always, but quite often I wish I did (such as with MOO3, for example). The reviews keep appearing, but I've bought games based on reviews before and been disappointed (Black And White, anyone? JK3? Unreal 2?) People keep saying it's a great game, and I'm sure it is. But I've bought games based on recommendations before, and again, been disappointed.
The card in the MOO3 box
To tromikus: I believe the player can fiddle with some sliders hidden somewhere in the UI, which say what kind of things will be researched. But these are still fairly general, and are along the lines of "military", "industrial", etc. Whether "military" means weapon techs, ship techs, or whatever, is out of your control I think.
1) SMAC did this very well - units looked odd, but you could see what they were. And, hey, since when does an Infantry man bigger than a city NOT look odd? ;) 2) Indeed. MOO3 has an odd UI. They are trying to change things in order to make it better, but they've not done it very well. When the demo comes out, I'll see if GalCiv's is better in the ways that I want, and if it is, I'll buy it. 3) There are holes here, yes. At least they have a decent online help framework, it
Hehe... I think there must be half the MOO3 forum here. I think QS made the mistake of changing the wrong things - long-time fans were alienated because a feature they liked was taken out, and newcomers (like me) still weren't helped by the game's UI. AI is one of the most talked about problems, but I hit upon many many many examples of bad UI design. And also just bad game model (especially in the military functions). Ironically, I found out about this game from a c
Oops meant to say 'slightly cynical'. :)
I went into Gme the morning it was released (in Leeds). Personally, I wouldn't say you've missed much. Watch the IG forums to see if the opinion changes for the better after the patch. I played KODP, and it was... interesting. Personally, I found it had too much reading. But it's definitely nice to see a different approach, and the writing was good.
Indeed it does. But then again, MOO3 was available "worldwide" last month, according to teh official website. Funny, that - it was only released over here on Friday. Sorry for this slightly pessimistic and slightly attitude, but I'm sure you can understand why I'm reserving judgement (positive or negative) till I've played the game and seen it happen. That's all.
It's being marketed in the UK - the UK version of MOO3 has a card for GalCiv in the box. So I'd be surprised if it doesn't find a UK distributor fairly soon after release. Of course, it might not get distributed straight away in the UK. We'll just have to see.
Shogun: Total War Kohan Close Combat IV Settlers 1 & 2 SMAC Sim City 4 MAX 1 & 2 Like many others, I hope to add GalCiv to the top of the list, but I'm waiting to see if it belongs there. Things are looking good so far.
Sounds good. My list of best strat games is somewhat different, as I also enjoy lots of tactical play - Close Combat is always good. I personally think Shogun is better than Medieval in interface terms - the way the formations change so they work better together wasn't carried over to Medieval. But anyways, the fact that the potential customers have played a game before release, and said it's great, is always a good indication of a great game. The fact that people say
Thanks - the 'global management' thing is pretty much what I was hoping for. Now all I have to do is wait for the demo. :)
Yeah - that's why I'm here as well - a little disappointed with MOO3. Also, the fact that a flyer for GalCiv came with MOO3 ;D Reading the FAQ, I'm looking forward to GalCiv's demo. I'd like to see if they have avoided the micromanagemet trap. Their FAQ states that accessibility is important, and micromanagement is detrimental to accessibility, IMHO. But then QS said they were going to break the micromanagement mould with MOO3, and it's still one of the biggest problems. I
Thanks,in advance, BTW
Hi, I guess I could wait till the demo comes out, but I decided to ask - much quicker. :D I just wanted to find out what (if anything) Stardock were doing to avoid the micromanagement trap that so many other games fall into?
