It also depends on what type of game you're looking for. On the higher difficulties, it really is a thinking game. On the lower difficulty settings, you have more freedom to mess around and "waste time" without being punished for it. So what do you find entertaining? I think you're right CantinaFly. Some Gal Civ players enjoy straining against the AIs on suicidal. Personally, I prefer to just my games to unwind... As such, most of my Gal Civ gam

Now, I'm not a Gal Civ expert (indeed, I don't even have DA), but did it ever occur to you to use beam or missile based attack ships? If so, is there some reason for not doing so that I don't know about?

I'm sure you've all at some point had a ship (Or ships) you considered to be really sucessful vessels. Perhaps they single-handedly saved a vital colony for distruction, perhaps they racked up an amazing number of kills, or maybe they were just so insanely lucky as to be memorable... For me, I've had two such situations. One was during a war between myself (Terrans), the Korx and their Yor allies. The Acreans provided be with a fairly ugly laser frigate to help me out. It was more power

There is a sailor's superstition about renaming ships... you don't do it. Well, surely it has to make an exception for when your ship comes off of the production line as 'Wellington class 1701' right? the submarine Corpus Christi was "renamed" "City of Corpus Christi," Yea, they didn't want to suffer from controv

Well I don't have a strict list or anything, I just think it wouldn't make sense to call a tiny ship 'TAS Titan' or a massive ship 'TAS Hornet'. Also, I said medium ships generally get 'names of famous people like Patton, Moscow, Jupiter and Templar'. What I meant to say was that they get names of famous people like Patton, names of cities like Moscow, names of planets like Jupiter and themes/ideas like Templar or Endeavour.

In no particular order, the games that hold a specail place in my heart... Star Trek: Armada 1: Armada 2 was a complete and total let down, but the original is still one of the best Trek games out there depite being 3 quarters of a decade old. Conquest: Frontier Wars: Great gameplay, surprisingly good graphics and an above average story line. If you're a sci-fi fan, CFW is a great (but little known) choice. Populous: The Beginning: Developed by Bullfrog almost a decade

This'd make good choices "Short term pain, long term game" with evil choices being the opposite. I think that's a very good idea myself. It would better reflect how good always seems to triumph over evil in the end, both in fantasy and in the real world... As they stand now though, I tend to base my choices on a mixture of the associated bonuses or penalties and also the personality of my race. For example, if I'm playing the Dregans,

Hmm, all are interesting ways to do it. It sounds like a lot of you have neither the time of the paitence to name every ship you construct. Again, as for me, I tend to name by ships in similar style to how Star Trek does it. I try not to randomly choose names though. I do my best to pick names appropriate to the specific class. Note: Shown below are the names I give my Terran ships. All these have the 'TAS' prefix. Smaller combat ships will have names like Sabre, Wasp

I'm just curious as to what you like to name your ships. Do you just give every ship of the same type a generic name. Do you ahve a unique name for each ship? Do you not bother at all? Trust me, I think this thread will prove more fascinating than it sounds... Now, it may sound a bit anally retentive, but I like to give very ship I construct (unless its something like a troop ship that won't be around for very long anyway) its own unique name. Playing the Terrans, I would usually call m

In my opinion, Stardock should take Gal Civ's lego setesque ship designer one step further and design an entirely sperate simulation based on it. It may sound like an odd concept, but it has been tried in the past (such as with Simon and Schuster's Star Trek: Starship Creator). Everyone loves the ship designing aspect of Gal Civ, perhaps even more than the actual game itself. Indeed, when I first played the game I found many of the gameplay concepts to be rather simplicstic (though I h
