BETA 5: Notes and Bugs

BETA 5: Notes and Bugs

Put them in here.

Beta 5 is the last major public beta of Galactic Civilizations II.  We will have a minor update on Monday to fix a problem discovered with nVidia cards (crashes on start for them).

Some of the highlights of the new version include:

+ You can set the resoluton from within the game (which is what we think causes the problem on nVidia cards).

+ The Miles Sound System is now in replacing our own home made sound system.  However: If you had a previous version installed, your sound and such will not be set right, you'll need to go to options and turn up the sound since it uses a totally different volume control system.

+ It's been optimized for performance. So it should be faster than previous versions.

+ It should use less memory.

+ The human colony ship has a high-resolution texture. We want to see how this performs for people as it's 8 times larger than the typical "high res" texture you have in other games.

+ The planet screen has been re-designed. We don't have all the icons and graphics in yet but the basic layout is there.

+ The Invasion screen is much closer to completion now.

+ Lots of gameplay tweaks.

+ ALL your settings are now kept in \my documents\my games\galciv2

+ There is a lot more "jewelry" in the game for customizing ships including the ability to rotate the stuff.

+ A lot of stuff was done with custom races to make it more seamless.

+ Computer AI is smarter about ship design and what ships it builds.

+ Ethical Alignment choice bonuses are now working.

+ Tons of bug fixes.

Also, this beta marks the end to new beta testers being able to join.  Users who pre-order (regardless from where) will get the Collector's Edition version of the game which has additional content.

I got the message stating than in 10 turns, I will winn a cultural victory. But the civilization manager still shows 0% for an influence win.

When starting a metaverse game after played a normal one, I got placeholder for all customized ships I have previously made in the normal game. And this is pretyy annoying to have lots of items without anythiung (no ship displayed, all characteristics set at 0)

The espionage screens that announce that you've reached low, medium, high, or advanced levels of spying frequently show up twice. That is, you'll get an announcement that you've achieved "Medium" level on the Drath, and then on the next turn you get the exact same announcement over again.

> GalCiv2 Crashes when Restoring a Game

> While playing the game over the span of hours I noticed that saving the game took very long. The memory utilization had grown to 600MB, likely do to memory leakes. When I try restoring the last auto save, after several minutes a dialog box appears with title, "Fatal Error" and message "Invalid call".

This game was created under the first Beta 5 and I continued it using GalCiv2 0.80a[b].002 when it was released. I created a new game using GalCiv2 0.80a[b].002 and have not been able to reproduce this problem so far.

However, I have sometimes seen crashes when attempting to create a new ship design.

When you invade an aliens planet, the manu, econ, tech capital icons stay on the planet tiles, meaning you can have more than 1 each empire. The invasion screen gives you a hint who won, you can see the borders change in the background before you get the results.

What is the point of the defender model? it becomes obsolete straight away and you can't upgrade it? You should be able to upgrade or at least copy the pretty ship designs, they seem wasted, same with the transports, colony.Nice ship designs but obsolete after 10 turns.Copy ship design is a must.

About the new event where your influence gets ignored. WAY OVERPOWERED! I was a very close second in population and military strength and first in everything else, with strong enough influence that I'd win culturally before I won militarily if I hadn't disabled cultural victory, though I'd easily pull a tech victory long before then). One event triggers, and now I'm desperately throwing my entire economy into building constructors to build cultural starbases in my frontier areas before the mass defections hit. I kid you not, in just a few turns, the cultural borders have shifted three sectors (that's the big squares, not the little ones, right?). That's almost 17% of a gigantic map due to one random event in an area that I shoudn't have been particularly vulnerable. Heck, accidentally declaring war on the entire known universe due to a combination of a bug and linked alliances wasn't this bad!

If I didn't have the kind of economy that could sustain building a new cultural starbase (at over 1000BC just to build a starbase, then much more for all the expansion) every few turns, I would thave thrown in the towel, and I'm still not at all sure I can pull it off. I won't mind loosing the handful (3 or so) planets I got via culture flipping, but as soon as I loose a planet to a culture flip that is one that I founded myself, it will be time to quit and start a new game.

Agree. I have got it and the influence map was horrible after. I did reload a previous savegame to get a cultrual win.

I am wondering that now that the public beta is over ,are the new beta releases going to be available on Stardock Central for those of us who prepaid for GC II? I am due GCII under the terms of my renewal for TGN.

The Yor just asked me for aid against the Drath, and the response that was pre-filled in the Diplomacy screen was "And jump on the sinking ship that is the Drengin? Doubtful". The response should be "sinking ship that is the Yor?". I'll send a screen shot to gc2bugs.

The Altarian have came telling me:
"We have laid claim over some territories you now occupy. Therefore, we require some rent to continue utlizing the planets you're on. Hand over [CashValue] bc if you wish to live".

And in the bargain screen, they are asking for 2562 BC.

And the funny thing is that the altarian zone of influence doesn't border mine: there are others races between us or even space without any influence.

The A.I doesn't always use the planet specials. On many invaded worlds i'll see special approval tile with labs or factorys on it,ect.

I've noticed that when using the find button or the spacebar to select one ship after another, sometimes the selected ship will be just off the edge of the window. I've sent a couple of screenshots to gc2bugs to illustrate the problem.

The Galactic guid book has no image associated with it when choosing improvement to build

Trade goods seem very undervalued by the A.I in Beta5,not even worth a standard research most of the time.
Also some of the pics of the trade goods are missing.

When loading a new game. Clicking next at choose oponents (before galaxy loads) I get a couple skips in the music. I think this is mainly on my end as it is an older laptop I am playing on.

When you send a fleet of constructors (at least 2) to a starbase to upgrade it, 2 things can appear:
- if for the first constructor, no extra fees are required for the choosen improvement, then you will have automatically the window for choosing the improvement associated with the second constructor. This case appears for ressources mining modules
- if for the first constructor, extra fees are required for the choosen improvement, like it is generally the case for cultural modules in cultural starbase, then you will have a window asking you to confirm the fee, and another one displaying the implemented module in the starbase. But you need then manually to move the rest of the fleet to the starbase to upgrade it again.

When displaying the installed modules of a starbases, the list isn't scrollable even if the GUI hints so.

In the research screen, the Research Academies seems to have 2 future techs: invention matrix and Neutrality learning center. But the tech map list only one tech, invention matrix.

Should be a great game when done, meanwhile:

I always get CTD when trying to load a saved Gigantic. I also had a CTD problem with a Huge but it may have been event related. In any case the autosaves would not reload

The SB list of modules does not scroll.

There should be a flag on any SB when it is full and the flag disapears when more modules come on line.

Deleted ship designs reappear in future games.

Will there be pre-done designs or templates at least for those who do not care about designing ships?

I'm sure the zero influence news is a known bug but does it have something to do with the overblown/unrealistic culture backlash?

I had 2 (all) Iconian planets flip to me without notice early in a tiny game. No skull and crossbones or anything.

There should be someway to limit the number of minors in a game. It seems that if you don't fill up the galaxy with majors the game will fill it with minors.

Will there ever be a way to make a proposal to the Galactic Council (or whatever it's called). Seems kind of one sided to have no input.

I gather that what we have is what we get until the 1.0 comes out in Feb-Mar. Is this correct?

You guys have your work cut out for you to get it raedy in 90 days. Good luck

Got another CTD after hitting "New" on the shipyards window. Exception report sent to gc2bugs.
In another thread I asked whether the fact that the report on minor civs says "If we plan to properly wage war against them, it'd be wise to allocate money towards espionage" was a bug, since there's no way to spy on minors. Since there's been no response so far, I'm posting it here too in case it is a bug.

Only the betas are closed to public access now. When the game is released, you'll have access to GC2 along with the rest of us in the rollover crowd.

Although, I'm gonna be sending a few more bucks to Stardock to get them to send me a copy of the pretty box and manual Keep in mind, this is a personal choice, and the rollover crowd will get the download version of the final game, as promised when the rollover occurred. I've yet to see Stardock break that kind of promise, and doubt I will.
