BETA 5: Notes and Bugs

Put them in here.

Beta 5 is the last major public beta of Galactic Civilizations II.  We will have a minor update on Monday to fix a problem discovered with nVidia cards (crashes on start for them).

Some of the highlights of the new version include:

+ You can set the resoluton from within the game (which is what we think causes the problem on nVidia cards).

+ The Miles Sound System is now in replacing our own home made sound system.  However: If you had a previous version installed, your sound and such will not be set right, you'll need to go to options and turn up the sound since it uses a totally different volume control system.

+ It's been optimized for performance. So it should be faster than previous versions.

+ It should use less memory.

+ The human colony ship has a high-resolution texture. We want to see how this performs for people as it's 8 times larger than the typical "high res" texture you have in other games.

+ The planet screen has been re-designed. We don't have all the icons and graphics in yet but the basic layout is there.

+ The Invasion screen is much closer to completion now.

+ Lots of gameplay tweaks.

+ ALL your settings are now kept in \my documents\my games\galciv2

+ There is a lot more "jewelry" in the game for customizing ships including the ability to rotate the stuff.

+ A lot of stuff was done with custom races to make it more seamless.

+ Computer AI is smarter about ship design and what ships it builds.

+ Ethical Alignment choice bonuses are now working.

+ Tons of bug fixes.

Also, this beta marks the end to new beta testers being able to join.  Users who pre-order (regardless from where) will get the Collector's Edition version of the game which has additional content.

- The social production doesn't take in account the race social production bonus (like the Thalan have)
- If you have nothing in your social queue, you are still spending BC on social production (which is not the case with military production)
- the bonus icons aren't consistent: you really need to click on the title to see what kind of bonus is given. For example, the 100% influence bonus and the 100% research bonus have now the same icon

delta leader: I have noticed the same problem, however, the planet will reappear for a short period if an improvement is completed on it. I'm not sure what triggers this though.

What size map were you playing on? What OS? What video card?

Guys, please remember to provide basic system info.  If planets are disappearing then that's some sort of hardware related issue we need to deal with.

When you save and restore does the planet return?

ALso, if anyone is unsure of their system specifics (video ememory on card, exact speed of CPU) just look in your root GalCiv2 folder for a file called "Debug.err".  It will write out your exact system specs at the top, making it easier for you to post here

yes the planet does return then. MAP SIZE: HUGE Card Name: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X (u could of guessed that one) Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
notes- when i zoom out as far as possible with tactical i can no longer tell what i have selected by the little blue circle. the icon of whatever i have selected is over top of it.
-autopilot lines on 100% on a huge map seem a little thick.
-i cant see my boundries hardly or not at all when using the darkest default blue for a trace color on a huge map. maybe not make it avaible for a trace color?

Morale is still FUBARed. I have tax at 33%, and a few turns into the game, my homeworld loses 59% morale due to taxes. The turn before, it was 57%. I gave it one more turn, and it went to -61%!

Vinco - that's not a bug.  As your population grows, the people get more and more unhappy with things.

Beta 5 anomoly with the Ship Design window: When I click in the "Class" text area to give my design a new name, the text cursor appears in the wrong place, outside the text box and way over on the edge of the screen. If I start typing I see the change in the text box, so the cursor is really where I placed it. I'll send a screen shot to gc2bugs.

The text cursor in the ship design description window is huge, fills the text window from top to bottom. I sent another screen shot to gc2bugs.

When speaking to other races (it seems largely to be in conversations that they initiate), I often see things like [CashValue] and [TheirShortName]

Still seems a bit excessive, but I guess this is a design decision. Forgive my mistake.

Anyway, the sound for me is quite choppy in the race customization screen. For reference, I have a SB Audigy 2ZS with the latest drivers.

I pick Technologist as a party. It defaulted back to Federalist in game. Will try to recreate after this game is done.

The third planet I colonized failed to create the "capital" so I can not build any of the structures on the tiles.

Terran race. Normal difficulty.

Vinco, what's your CPU?

Planet Quality bonuses do not seem to take effect. For instance, as a test, edit your raceconfig file and pump up the PQ bonus to something noticeable (like 100%) and then load that file for your race and make your game. Colonize a class 4 planet (the one in your home system) and it will read class 8, but only gives you 4 tiles. However, your home world will start at class 20 with the appropriate number of tiles for a class 20 world.

Saving game, then loading game will allow you to buy multiple things on a single colony during a single turn. (Sent an E-mail to gc2bugs on this).

Money does not display correctly when loading games. It keeps displaying the money from the previous game, until you hit next turn or do something that forces it to recalculate things. (Sent an E-mail to gc2bugs on this).

Game loading corrupts memory and causes CTD. Load a game, then go back and load another, then another, then another. After loading 3-4 different games, you will either CTD or end up with no alien races in the game -- only you!
(Sent an E-mail to gc2bugs on this with copy of some saved games that cause this repeatedly).

Population calculations do not occur correctly. If you put 500 million people on your colony ship from your planet, the global population tally and the real population according to each colony total do not add up to the same number. Hit next turn, and they become the same. But you still have 500 million pop on your colony ship that are not being counted in the global total. (Sent E-mail to gc2bugs on this with screenshot and saved game).

After playing into the game a ways, I still get random CTDs for reasons I can't determine. I am guessing that it has something to do with a technology item. When I put the game on slowest tech research, the game will not CTD out for hours and hours and hours. When I put it on fastest tech research, it crashes in 1-2 hours of play. Each time, the latest autosave will crash out in a set number of turns (like when an alien race discovers the particular buggy tech). I've sent numerous saved games in to gc2bugs that exhibit this issue. I have yet to finish this game, only because it won't let me progress far enough without crashing out.

GNN list of events is not scrollable via the mouse wheel.

GNN list doesn't show invasions.

GNN list sometimes misses combat. I've seen an enemy ship come along, take out the only defending ship in orbit around a planet, and then watched carefully for a GNN report so that I could find the planet, and the GNN report only showed other victorious combats. GNN does show some defeats, just not all of them.

Request: Could we get GNN combat reports that resulted in the loss of a ship highlighted somehow, to make them stand out?

I am getting the same CTDs too. Happens when one of the AIs sue for peace.

EDIT: Happens if sue for peace is acceped. No CTD if rejected.
