What is better game GC2 or GC3

Been playing GC3 since it lauched (not beta), and am quite impressed with the engine and design.

Although at the same time, quite underwhelmed by the game itself.

Apart from expanding (although dont like the exploits on upgrading contruction ships), I am finding that there doesn't seem to be much to do in the game. Diplomacy is dull, planet development is dull, and battles are dull.

I guess the developers will build on this game, and hopefully it will get better - there is a good starting point here.

So i'm wondering, is GC2 at this point the better game than GC3? And should I go play that while I wait for this one to be improved and bug/expolits fixed.

What do people who have played both think?

IMO GC II feels more "complete", which is no wonder though given its age and number of addons. I wouldn't say "better" per se, there are too many cool things in GC III already and I don't want to play without them anymore, so going back is no option for me. Still, III has obviously lots of room for improvement, and I hope we do see it coming in further patches, DLCs etc...

Give me a break.

This thread is nearly pointless as you are asking for an opinion.

GCII has benefited from 10+ years of DLC and 3 major expansions. Come back to this game after 10 years and ask this question again. GCIII is FAR better by light years. Native 64 bit, Hexes, Adjacency bonuses, Better ship designer, Better color and textures, Minable strategic resources, Improved Diplomacy screen, the list goes on and on.

Of course GCII may feel better to you, however the AI  in that game can NEVER improve, here in GCIII it is data driven meaning with time and mods this game will likely end up the very best 4x in 20 years.

Yes I am asking for opinions, how does that make it pointless? And if it is, why do you bother giving your own opinion.

It's a very relevant question for me - is the new game actually a better game than the older one.

I'm not asking if it will eventually become better.

A good 4X matures over time like a fine cheese, as long as it is looked after.  It's a tad unfair to compare the two at this stage.

GC2 is presently the better game. GC3 has the potential to be far, far better, but presently hasn't fulfilled it (unsurprisingly, given that GC2 had 10 years of feedback and upgrades while GC3 has about three weeks worth since it reached completion).

not counting espionage which two does better. Three has the planet list in your face. Better battle viewer. Ship designer is a moot point. Better star bases. Better resources. More types of resources. Adjancency bonuses. Upgrading on each step. The tree broken up. Specializations. In your face Ai. Potential for more players. Pirates. Bigger maps. More stuff in spAce. Different starting positions. At least gives you pictures of resources. Idealogy.

two has the ability to upgrade not destroybuildings. Two has trade goods instead of tradeable resources. Galactic achievements. More starting players. More customizable starting players.

I think three wins. I like both games.

in two better menu options. In three when you are starting a new game three wins. Customization three wins you can separate players from opponents in three. All around the menu system wins in three except when you want to catagorise your planet by class name production income or population. Two you can rotate ships in the designer. Three has quick start. Three classifie your techs.

two came out on cd with the ability to register so you never lose the game. If you don't have the internet you could at least install the game. Two had a digital and paper manual. Two had an editor for non modders. Does diplomacy do anything in three. Still think three is better.

End of Larsenex's quote

Well, in 20 years, it will look as outdated as Tie Fighter does now ;)

GC3 is far better, but at the same time, I feel there are some functionality missing that would have been nice to have.  Yes, I know, they will come later.
But put yourself in the shoes of someone who just bought the game full price.  Do you feel a little underwhelmed?  You and I bought it on pre-release (and you're a founder, so lot earlier than me :) ) knowing what we were getting.  But a new customer?  I'd feel underwhelmed.

Well, that is the past, anyway.  We'll all work on the future now :)

two had minors building star wars. Three has 10000 minors. Three has better diplomacy looks. The menu system is better in most ways untill in need to organize planets.

I like both 2 and 3 as to whether 3 is better than 2 ask me again when GC3 hits v2.03? They are both different from each other in playstyles that I'll put it this way - IF GC3 doesn't turn out as well as GC2 you'll know where I'll be - playing GC2 making sure the Toriens get their revenge on the drengin!

GalCiv III is a better game but GalCiv II has a lot more depth.

I like this game more.  The economic system makes a lot more sense.  But it needs to grow. Too early in the development cycle to judge yet.  And there are, uh, issues that need to be fixed.  Major issues.

MAJOR!!!!! ISSUES!!!!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( X(

Among other things: The Yor should NOT want snuggler colonies.  They're SYNTHETIC races.  THEY DON'T SNUGGLE.  Snuggling is a feature of BIOLOGICAL organisms. It makes no sense!!!!!

Galciv 3 over all is better:

1) Ship Designer is much better in 3 than in two except it needs better ways to organize ships and ship hulls like maybe an option to organize by class etc.  Also would be cool to be able to copy a design in the designer and PLEASE add a way to delete hulls in the designer.

2) The Battle Movie is better as well as having the ship class system.

3) Bigger maps - Still waiting the  Immense map  to be activated in Multiplayer (please)

4) Pirates - Also waiting for these to be activated in MP.  However I would also like to see more baddies like this (Antaries Attack anyone)

5) Better custom race designer - Still waiting and a way to attach specific custom ship styles to custom races such as Borg ships to the Borg, Cylon ships to the Cylons etc.

6) There are more but I can't think of them at the moment.

GalCiv 2

1) GalCiv 2 does have a more 'complete' feel to it but this is to be expected since Galciv just came out.

2) The bad guy invasion events which was really cool especially when they appeared while your still in primitive mode. The scramble to defend your empire under this pressure was awesome.

3) Galciv 2 was better organized like listing planets by alphabetical order, See all the Ship Fleets and put them in order od name oe power or def etc which is the same for other features in that game. GalCiv 3 desperately needs this especially since it is a bigger game with bigger maps and more planets and ships, Starbases, and ship yards to manage.

galciv 2 had better economics. The morale made sense in galciv 2.
