Ways to Buy and Play Game? "Metaverse"?

Hi!

Is GalCivIII going to be available only by downloading...and only from Steam?

Due to all the negative posts I've encountered "everywhere" about Steam, I've never used it.  If I go ahead and take the plunge (to play GalCivIII)...

Will I have to stay online and connected to Steam the whole time I'm playing GalCivIII?...or only to begin a new game?...or only to initially download and install the game?

Does (or will) GalCivIII offer a competitive "ranking" system...like the "Metaverse" for GalCivII?

Thanks!

When they add the Hall of Fame I hope they also add leaderboards which is what metaverse was I thought.

Thanks for your response!

Can you give me any insight as to my queries about Steam?

The stuff you hear about steam is not really an issue anymore. You can play the game not connected to the internet. You have to verify the game once the first time you fire it up and connect once. After that you can go into settings and 'play offline' and never be worried bout Steam being intrusive again.

I was a steam hater.

I have since changed my stance. The service is stable and has many features to help developers make better games and get said games distributed AND allow more seamless multi-player online.

You will need steam for updates and dlc and downloading mods most likely but to actually play the game only the first time

You can always play steam offline. I play most steam games on my laptop on the airplane including GalCiv. I think you need an online connection for the first time and *maybe* once a month

The problem with Steam and the reason I wont buy games thru them is that you never really own the game, you are at Steam's mercy to keep playing the game. If something happens to Steam you are SOL. Ergo I will never buy any Steam games.
