Frogboy's custom FE 1.29 build

Some people were reporting corrupted saves and other problems with v1.20. Others have complained about AI and performance.

So here's the build I made this weekend called v1.29frog. It's from my machine. It's not official but you can complain about stuff here in this post.

Update!

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8051911/FE-129toad.zip

Specifically, I am looking to see if it solves the problem with corrupt autosaves. The AI should be better too but hard to tell if people will notice.

NOTE: You unzip this into your existing FE directory (replacing the EXE already there).

What actual changes have you made to the AI?

I'd love to hear what you did to performance, I get sad to start a game and ½ an hour late lose it due to my sucky back-up computer xD
(or play a game in ½ hour increments.... Not my style =))

Sincerely

When I tried to run your patch I received this message...

"This application has failed to start because libcurl.dll was not found.  Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

What would you suggest?

libcurl.dll Error same as above...

Really starting to about loose it, played Elemental and ended up paying for an alpha that was abandoned a month after release,..

And now FE which has half worked at best through 5-6 different patches, and this time I feel like I am paying to play a beta.

I have enjoyed several Stardock games in the past and I cant comprehend how this is from the same company.

How much failure do you expect your customers to take before they never buy another Stardock game?

Frogboy - I got the same error when I tried to run it a few minutes ago.  BTW - I haven't noticed a problem with corrupt autosaves in 1.2, but then a again I usually save manually & reload those games.  If you get this working I'll test reloading autosaves.

You should return it then. If it's giving you that much trouble.  Drop a note to support@stardock.com. Tell them I sent ya.

Have you ever been on Steam & seen how many patches are posted each week for released games?  I'm sorry my friend, but this is where the industry is at.

Personally, I'm just glad Brad cares enough to keep working on this game on the weekends, he doesn't have to do that you know.

Since I can play & enjoy FE as it is right now (v1.2 crashes maybe once a night, usually after 2 or more hours, & I don't find any of the remaining bugs game breaking), I certainly don't feel it's a failure.

I've updated the link with, what I hope, are the missing DLLs. I'm not sure why it now requires those DLLs.

Just a reminder, builds off my personal machine aren't official. They're not supported. They're just builds from my machine that have code a little more updated than what's generally available.

Your attitude = your loss.

This is my favorite Stardock game and if it stands the test of time, my favorite game period.

I really can't understand how someone can go off when the developer is offering an unofficial patch--something he certainly doesn't have to do--proving once again that no good deed shall go unpunished.

But by all means keep your preconceived negative thoughts about this game, and I promise you that your wish to find "bad" things about it will be fulfilled. Meanwhile, I'm having a blast playing it.

You are right, I apologize.

It is ok for a company to make a product and release it in an alpha state then drop all support for it, then remake it and have constant bugs and and after months and countless patches still have this level of trouble.

They offered a discount for this game if you bought Elemental BECAUSE IT WAS A NOTED FAILURE.

Again I loved playing several Stardock games, but even beyond all the bugs and crashes...this game still suffers from poor pacing and many basic design flaws.

I think the 1.12 patch was the only patch I played that didnt crash on me constantly.

Congrats you like the game, so do I but that isnt the point.

Works ok now.  I reset autosave to 2 turns.  No crashes on loading autosave inside game after 4 tries.  Note: On 3rd reload I lost the ocean graphics, but they came back on the 4th reload.  I exited & loaded the Previous autosave & autosave without crashing. Note: this time the ocean graphics were there.

Again - you seem to be in the minority.  For most of us this game is very stable & the bugs are not game breakers.  We could argue pacing & design all night and never agree,  Are you reporting crashes so that the Dev's can see what's going on?

@scifi

I know and am fine with a company releasing patches after release, I expect a few bugs now a days.

I have been playing this game since the 1st week of launch and trying all but maybe 1-2 patches released, every one but 1.12 crashed on me, some it was unplayable crashing every 10-15mins, others maybe every 2-3 hours.

I am a computer tech with a clean and fast computer, but I dont have to say it isnt just me, you can just read the forums.

This game is buggy - Fact

This game crashes - Fact

But pardon me for getting upset after spending 6 hours on a save to have it flushed because the game wont load any saves now.

It worked fine and I have 4-5 saves in, then towards late game nothing, even saves which loaded fine before wont work.

I have watched frogboy for years now and I give him 2 thumbs up, I really do.

But I just get this vibe they make this game with a team, and then dump it on 1-2 guys in an alpha/beta state and say there finish the last 20-25% of it.  We're going to start working on a sequel/DLC/Expansion.

Look at the genral tab for this forum...not the bug reports or anything else, just the general.

50 topics, and I counted 28 talking about bugs and crashes.

So about half the current topics in GENERAL are about bugs/crashes.

Define minority?

Ironically, one of the reasons I carried no anger over from E:WoM was that I disliked the original so much, I barely played it. I got FE for free since I bought E:WoM at launch. What a pleasant surprise it has been!

Even though I disliked the original, I give the company credit for trying to improve it; they did NOT abandon it after release and issued several major patches. Yet, despite their efforts to fix it, most will agree it was a failure.

So the company realizing this decides to try again from scratch. Yes there are still some rough spots in FE, but the company continues to work on making the game better. Unfortunately, for some, the latest patch seems to have caused some crash issues. I'm fortunate; for me, the game is more stable than ever.

Frogboy put out his unofficial patch in hopes it would help some people, such as yourself, who are having trouble with 1.20. I don't know of any other game that has ever offered that level of service.

So, I sympathize that you're one of those who have had issues with 1.20. If you think the game has "poor pacing" and "many basic design flaws," you are welcome to your opinion. (Are we playing the same game?) I just get annoyed to see someone bash the company so hard when the company seems to be doing everything they can to make things right.

Then why aren't you reporting those crashes? How are the devs supposed to fix them, if you don't provide the necessary information?

Guys, please try to stay polite.

This applies to those reporting issues as well as those defending the game. Everyone has the right to get vocal when their game gets ruined by corrupted saves or crashes. If it was happening to me, I'd be up on the barricades as well.

And those reporting bugs, if you think invoking the history of Elemental as bug-ridden will get your current issues fixed faster, you are wrong. Be concise, follow the guidelines laid out to report issues and wait for an update or ask for a refund.

Giving the 1.29 a try today, seems to be holding up well but early in the game I guess.

Well, interesting bug to report with 1.29frog.  Factions I haven't met yet can contact me to trade but I can't contact them.

that would explain how AI is able to sign trade agreements, without meeting first, and/or being unable to meet - I've experienced multiple times a road through my territory, when I know they couldn't possible pass through it to meet themselves, sometimes as early as in tenth turn

There's a bug in my build regarding this.  You do have relations but the the first contact message isn't working as designed (I moved it into a thread and it's being wonky).
