My Recommendations to save Demigod

My Recommendations to save Demigod

Demigod was definitely one of the most underrated rts games ever to be released but I think it can make a comeback. Right now the community is relatively small and it isn't getting any larger but all hope is not lost. Here are my recommendations to help boost the status of Demigod:

1. Take 1-2 years (let's say 2010 and 2011) to develop a standalone expansion which includes:

a. 8-10 demigods

b. Single player mode which follows the lore of the demigods. Include cinematic cutscenes and storytelling.

c. More Multiplayer modes and maps

2. Allow mod makers to make and publish maps

3. Release the game on Steam! Include Demigod + Expansion package deal (Original Demigods are locked in the expansion). I suggest a retail price of around $20 for the original.

4. Do NOT compare the game with DOTA! (Many gamers expected Demigod to be a DOTA clone like Heroes of Newerth or League of Legends)

5. Use standard copy protection on the games (but not extreme like Spore)

6. Ensure there are no Multiplayer connectivity issues before launch!

PS: I don't actually know what are the plans for Demigod because I haven't been on the forums since around launch. These are just my suggestions so Stardock can take it or leave it. If they don't do something along these lines, Demigod will fade away by the end of the year.

One last thing- a sdk is necessary for the community to make mod maps. It works fine in most games- remember that dota is a warcraft 3 mod map.
No matter how I ty to explain it people just don't get it; these aren't the same type of maps. Those maps are not actual 3-D objects. Demigods maps are the same as the demigods themselves; they are 3-D meshes You have to treat these as 3-D objects and you don't just place these and that here or their. I don't know any easier way to get people to understand unless you sit them down and see first hand that these aren't maps that can just be created by a modding community.
As said above already, somsone suggested changing it so that it doesn't have to be that way. Coding something (the game) that requires maps to be rediculously time consuoming to make was a mistake from the get-go.

And I think there's more people out there that are knowledgable in working with 3D meshes and implemnting them. The probblem usually lies in the export method and how the game reads the files. Regardles, community mod'able games far outlast non-modifyable games and a change of a methods would be nice. I doubt it'll ever happen in this game though (as far as mapping goes).

Steam has way more foundation then Impulse, and honestly steam is free and works great. A lot of people don't like Steam because they cause them hassle with pirated games (big surprise).

And lastly, might as well just make a new game from the ground up and change things up. Sequels only work so well, and you'll never please everyone (or the majority)

\Actually no I like these maps better then those of DotA, and warcratf, These are more beautiful artistically. Who said this game can't be modded; have you been in the modding community there are edited map mods, new and different favor items. I thin people expect a moddable game should allow absolutely everything to be changed which I find stupid really.

The beauty of the maps and environments is one reason I probably haven't stopped playing yet.

You do know that the only reason Demigod maps look better than Warcraft 3 maps is because of the game engine right? WC3 is almost 10 years old and it still has a larger community than Demigod because Blizzard does things right- they take their time and release a game with a deep singleplayer story and excellent balanced multiplayer.

Like someone said, when Starcraft 2 launches (again another Blizzard game) it will crush other rts games, Demigod included. It is up to Stardock to either let the game die, or take suggestions and improve Demigod. Proper mod tools and community can go a VERY long way.

Note that whether Demigod succeeds or fails is of no consequence to me since I don't even play it. I just don't want to see a game with such potential die.

You've seen the videos of Starcraft maps right? They arnt too impressive. Unless they go crazy on working on the maps (which I doubt) I don't think they will change much.

You do know stardock is not blizzard games right? They can't do everything blizzard games can, and ever thought it may not be possible for every game copany to release a large expansion pack for their games. Yes I know it looks better because f the engine, and I also know what the engine is. If you don't play the game then you shouldn't give a damn whether it has potential or not, because it has nothing to do with you. You are not freaking playing it..

I suggested Steam as a means of download and advertising but not necessarily to play the game. I am sure Stardock can have the Multiplayer work normally even if the game is acquired via Steam.
End of quote

I have yet to see any game that is purchased on steam that is able to run without steam running. so,

1) I doubt Steam would let Demigod run without Steam running,

2) Steam and Impulse are major competitors, so I don't see Stardock letting Steam sell Demigod. And I think that is completely related to why Steam doesn't let any other digital distributer sell Valve games. (At least I'm under the impression that you can only get them at retail and at Steam...), and

3) Going back to the original point of having to run steam to play; that is a major reason some people, myself included, don't like Steam. I don't want to have to connect online to play games that I own. Even if it has offline mode, I have to be prepared to go offline. Sometimes I can't plan ahead like that. Then I can't play my games. I do not like the fact that I can only "own" my games when I have internet. Sorry, this ended up being more of a rant on Steam, I'll stop there.

I agree with this; I only bought one steam game (killer floor) and I can't even run it offline without a internet connection.

Can someone please lock the shit out of this thread, and even better ban this person.

Apart from his totally clueless and arrogant attitude he also doesn't play the game and is only advertising for blizzard/starcrfat 2.

Starcraft is a fucking stupid game. Dota is a fucking stupid game. Blizzard doesnt make balanced multiplayer games(cept for starcraft which took 10 years, most of their games are horrendously unbalanced). Blizzard has way way more money than SD/GPG. WE DONT FUCKING NEED DRM.
