If you install the RC, there is no upgrading to retail from that. You'll need to freshly install. That said, the RTM will be released at some point, and that will let you upgrade, and there are ways of allowing RC upgrade to RTM, so. Do some Googling, you'll find it, just look for Windows 7 upgrade from RC to RTM. This may very well work for release too - I don't know. I plan on fresh installing, as upgrades are always a bit... wonky

Good question. I have NOT gotten RTM yet, but you make a good point. If you can go straight to RTM, then that would be the smart thing to do.

I am assuming that you can just put in an activation Key when you purchase Windows 7 retail, just make sure when you install RTM, you install the version you plan on buying. So, Premium RTM==Premium Retail.

What your are asking is not really legal imo.

Your are asking for final software. Asking for beta or RC is ok but for a RTm product its illegal.

You either need to install the beta/RC and upgrade later, or wait till october 22, when its released.  RTM is for MSDN and technet subscribers only.

I've heard (And Vista worked like this) you can just input your retail key into your RC version, and it will extend the license past march.  The only downside is you may have some beta/RC leftovers.  I imagine a lot of that will be patched out, but you may also miss out on some goodies that retail ships with that RC didnt.  Either way, it will let you use your PC after March without reinstalling windows.

You can download RTM legally, but you will need to input a legally purchased activation code once you purchase your final product October 22.

EDIT: As an aside, a better place to find more informed answers would be a place like http://www.sevenforums.com

Acording to the microsoft web site the RC can not be upgraded to retail, by entering a key you have to uninstall then reinstall win 7 once you purchese it.

Yes. I found that and downloaded and went to install on second partition then it asked me for key :( so i guess ill just wait for retail, i dont need to pirate it just wanted to test it out, and not up for using the RC version since I cant upgrade it to retail would be kinda waste of time to set it up...

Another question about windows. Right now I am on Win Vista 32 bit, I am thinking about getting 64bit Win 7, I am pretty sure my processor is 64 bit set up, i checked out AMD website for the one i have and says it is. But I want to know what is the major differance between 32 bit and 64 bit I have been unable to find a clear answer in my research.

I'm pretty sure that since Vista microsoft has been putting all the code for all the versions into each release and the key that accompanies it unlocks a certain number of features.  This makes it easy to upgrade; if I want to go from Home to Ultimate, I give them my credit card, they send me a new key, I input the new key, BOOM all features are unlocked.

Thus, [the one and only RTM] == [any retail], depending on which key is supplied.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit#32_vs_64_bit This may help explain it although it is a bit technical.

Also I can see a tentative link between this and demigod but what is the point of it being in the demigod forum?

I prefer waiting to grab my msdn retail copy.

I'm using Win 7 RC (x32) in my work and it's amazing OS.

Honestly? I suppose I agree with Healer. it was fun to use the Windows 7 RC, but now I'm just looking forward to the release version. Admittedly, Windows 7 RC performed far better than Vista games-wise, but October is not so far off, may as well wait for release.
