Mod Idea: Nexus: The Jupiter Incident

For those of you who have played Nexus, you realize it is a completely unusual game.  It is the only tactical fleet simulator I know of.  It has an unusual and somewhat engaging storyline, especially at the end it bogs down with a bunch of Artificial Gods and Angels and other crap like that worse than Deus Ex 2.  If you haven't played it, it rocks.  Sins of a Solar Empire is Sins of a Solar Empire.  There is no other game like it.  Same with Nexus, except Nexus is a lot smaller in scale yet no less epic overall due to the fact that space is huge.  I mean, its HUGE!!!  (Insert Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy space entry here.)

For any bored modders, the Nexus Universe would be absolutely fun in Sins.  The sheer beauty of the ships, plus Sins's zooming capabilities allows us to get up close and enjoy the beauty of the ships trading blow up close and personally.  A perfect time period for the mod would be before the Angelwing shows up in Noah space, with the Humans, Vardrags, and Gorgs all killing each other, with no damned mechanoids to ruin the fun.  The whole small fleet command thing would have to be simulated through abilites and buffs/debuffs for ships,  with antimatter beign used as reserve energy, plus an actual fleet would have to be very small compared to Sins.  Plus Nexus has very few actual ship classes, relying mostly on customization of ships to get variety introduced.  However, researches could definitely help in that regard, with engine, weapon, shield, and antimatter upgrades all being researched instead mounted as components.

Vardrags would be mostly left out, their weapons suck, except for the Cataclysm missiles, and they have no taste for warfare besides, using humans to do their bidding with inferior technology.

However, a what-if scenario woudl work.  What if the humans decided to tell the Vardrags to shut it, and fight their own damn war?  That woudl force the Vardrags to fight, and allow them to have new, non-canon ships introduced because of the Raptors needing to take the place of the humans.

For the Pirates, free Raptors who are no longer Vardrag slaves.  Phase lanes would still be there because of the IP Drive.  For wormholes, just have instant star-to-star jumps.

Overall, Nexus is fairly doable in Sins, and would be absolutely freaking sweet.

tactical fleet simulator = starshatter
nexus2 tech demo looked spectacular...

dunno if nexus would lend itself enough to sins, nexus detail was all in its
ship customisation.... not its ship types

I, for one, always wanted to be the guy calling the shots, building the fleets up, then giving them their orders and watching them slice through the enemy. I want to be safe back in HQ, not on the bridge of that cruiser about to go up in flames.

And for that there would need to be some liberties taken with ships. For example, there could be a variant of the Colossus with the fort shield, and one with massive hangar bays. Same with missile destroyers, tactical destroyers (done with abilities), different types of cruisers, strike ones with fighters/bombers, close range ones, anti-strike ones. Who doesn't want a Balthazar-class battleship with Crisis Energy Torpedoes and Nova Plasma Guns? A freaking broadside of plasma after your Crisis Torps just nailed his shields to crap would be awesome.

The biggest problem I currently see is shields/hull damage. In Nexus, hull-damaging weapons can't hurt shields, and shield-damaging weps can't hurt hulls. As far as I know, Sins doesn't see a difference between shield damage and hull damage. And the whole shields take time to regenerate thing as well in Nexus as well.

For the IP drives, is it possible to have phase jumps cause effects on ships? So jumping (engaging IP drive) would drop your shields as well?
For wormholes and star travel, there was a guy on these forums who had wormholes connected across star systems so that would definitely work for custom maps.

However, the overall Nexus universe is simply awesome. The story, the environments, the epic-ness of it all. (Insert Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy entry on space). Really, Nexus is the only thing that feels as epic to me as Sins does, simply because of the scale. Even though you are the deciding factor in Nexus, you are fighting in asteroid fields the size of planets, and all throughout your ships are just insignificant compared to the size of the solar system they are trying to capture. I want that feeling again. Of even though you are the One Who Decides, compared to everything you are nothing.

And yes, the Nexus 2 tech demo was awesome. I hope it seriously becomes more than just a tech demo.

I saw the tech demo also, But from what I heard is that the game Nexus 2 was cancelled due to a shakeup in the ranks.

This was most distressing when I heard the news but I agree nexus may well fit nicly, you had

Space marine
fighters
corvettes
transports
cruisers
and battleships

This game is really orientated to capital warfare, but I think it will look in Sins, once I figure out how to export back into sins I'll give it a go

You forgot destroyers. How about the Sparta and that other one that was piloted by Cromwell's buddy? (Sorry, its been a long time away from Nexus.) There was the scout destroyer you had in the campaign plus the tactical one piloted by your friend. Plus online there were missile destroyers also.

Anyways, if you can somehow get a Nexus mod working and playable in Sins, I'll definitely download it.

Did I mention I'd play it too?

here is a blast from the past... i still don't think NExus has ernough ship types to put into sins

They do.

Nexus BASIC ship classes are frigates, destroyers, cruisers, battleships, and then the Colossus support ship.

Take those basic classes, and expand.

Tactical frigates, scout frigates, minelayer frigates.

Tactical destroyers, assault destroyers (a destroyer hull with no tactical weapons, just energy shells and railguns), missile destroyers.

Assault cruisers, light carriers, missile cruisers.

Assault battleships, shield breaking battleships, hull-killer battleships, assault carriers.

Fort shield Colossi, carrier colossi, bombardment colossi (missiles, energy bombs, plasma guns).

And that is just the humans. Add in Gorg and Raptor/Vardrag ships and you have more than enough to fill up all the slots.

For upgraded components, we can research.

Engines, shielding, weapons, power generators, power reserves can all be done as research instead of mounting new components.

In this mod, you're the guy at HQ calling all the shots.

That means you get to choose the shiny new equipment your ships get.

Jesus.  I think that may almost be a Necropost record.  Akkan, this thread has been dead for almost a year now.  Why revive it?

haha so true. But ive been making some very nexus like (personal) mods almost the same. That why i commented cuz i was looking for some ships to add to my mods.

No, don't have anything.  They got lost when I had to format my hard drive.  You probably should try to polish up your Nexus-ish mods and then release them.  One can never have enough mods.
