Editors...those weird new guys

This might have been asked before but I don't know so just tell me if there is already a post asking this.

I was looking at some of the post and people have been saying that after using editors that their game crashes, or it dosen't load, or when they try to do somethin it dosen't work. So I just wanted to know whhat exactly the editors do? How do I give my custom races their own tech trees? What makes ship editor different than the shipyard? How do I properly use all the editors? Where can I make a planet(I saw screenshots, I know it's there!)? Improvement editor...wtf? I think I can figure out map and campaign editors but some help with them is even welcome. And before anyone says 'Just play with them' or something else similar to that, I would, just chances are I would abandon the game. It happened with EA on Generals(they really should be more like Stardock). So if anyones got the time to explain or would like to point to the right place to learn, then please do.

The editors we don`t make the Planets. those are being done with other programs.

this is a editor that edits planet improvements.

the tech editor should let you do your custom races tech tree.

I have not used it i did mine the hard way open a xml file in note pad and edit it!!

ship editor different than the shipyard?
Ship Component Editor is different from the shipyard.
ship yard allows you to builds ships the component editor allows you to edit the components for the ships.

OK I'm getting it now, although instructions on how to use them just right would be nice, but that still helped.

Some of the editors make changes to the files even when you don't do anything.

I know for certain that the tech tree editor (for ver 1.92) will modify the tech at the top of the list to have its prerequisite tech point to the next item of the list (which can cause crashes if the 2 techs ends up requiring each other). Seriously, open the thing, load a tech tree and see what the first tech points to, then click it again and see what it points at after it refreshes properly (might not work if the file you are using has already been saved). Either way, it'll ask you to save the changes.

The Arceans tech tree is a good example to use. Opening it up with the editor, and you should find "Adamantium Armor" requires "Adamantium II". Click on "Adamantium II" and you should find it needs "Adamantium Armor". If it were to be saved now, the game would crash when the game tried to use it.

Fortunately, this is easily fixed. All you have to do is to change the prerequisite tech to something else (something that would not cause a crash).

As for a proper guide to them, I might be able to work on one once I'm done with TA 101.

Note: The darn thing would not let me edit.

I'm using ver 1.92 alpha, not release 1.92. This problem also existed in previous versions like current 1.91.
