Totally random stuff you want to see in sins?

I want to scratch my head and say "WTF?"

Imagine that you have a empire set up, colony's established and upgraded nicely. It's time to start exploring your planets for any goodies you can get your hands on. When one of your planets finishes exploration, instead of the usual message you get "Contact with a colony has been lost!"

You have a "oh crap" moment thinking it's been taken over or something so you send in scouts to investigate, but you lose contact with those as well. Just when you are about to send in the defense fleet you regain contact with the planets orbital structures, but your colony is gone....

Another scenario, you happen to leave a frigate beside a dead asteroid or space junk for a while. When you decide to move the frigate it doesn't respond. You scratch your head and just then it starts acting on it's own. It heads to the star where you watch (assuming you sent a scout to follow it) it jump to another star, in the opposite direction of any in the game.

Or perhaps something like the UFO in X3, you see it flying through your planets gravity well but it disappears.

If you want to get real interesting, through in a "Beast" infested ship in one of the space junk belts that can infect ships passing through and quickly get out of control until your waging a losing battle against your own ships. Make people terrified to explore the dark corners of the galaxy.

These are some ideas off the top of my head. Got the idea of this from the thread "Space is kind of boring.", which as the title suggests is kind of boring at times. Easter eggs like space ponies is fine and, but i want some true "WTF?" moments. Something that will keep me on the look out for the unexpected.

I have no expectation to see this in a patch or anything. A expansion pack at the least, perhaps someone will make a mod eventually (if it's possible). So what do you guys think? How much enjoyment would some truly bizarre events give you? Would you want to face something for which you are totally unprepared?

Problem with randoms is that they disrupt the gameplay. I don't wanna lose my entire attack fleet to some random energy storm.

Valid point. But i would want to see my entire fleet get ripped apart in a random energy storm.

I would want to see my entire fleet get ripped apart by a giant space squid...

Collapsing Sun...a system with a timer on it, like 5 hours after the start of the game the sun changes colour, 2 hours later - whammy, system gone!

Small events such as
"Massive widespread disease kills off 90% of the population, and 25% of nearby planets"
"Civil War on a planet has led to nuclear war, destroying much of the planet's infastructure and population"
"Energy Storm shorts out all ships in the gravity well; greatly slows them for a short time"
"Stock market falls; trading has very low profits for a short time"
"Goverment Officials in charge of all income are on strike; until we find new officials, we will get no income" and so on.

Thats good. I think it would be cool if there was like a 1% chance in maps with multiple galaxies and the star explodes in three hours with a timer and warning. Which would force you to flee into the other galaxies to survive the blast.

That is not good, nor are any of them small events. Realistic? Yes. Game breaking? Very.

I think it would be cool to see a shooting star fly across a few planets. I think Sins is trying to be somewhat realistic, so giant squids would...well...probably not work out no matter how cool it would be.

You have miscalculated the size of the planet you're invading by about 1000 times. Your entire armada is devoured by a dog.
