Game end

You know... I've played quite a number of SINS games now currently but something bugs me.

I've only seen the victory screen once. In about 7ish games. The typical "do you want to continue playing" screen.

So, the question is:

Other than just using your common sense and quitting when there's no one else left alive, how do you know when you win? Why doesn't the screen show up more often?

I've played some LAN games sometimes we ask each other, have we won? Is there anything else left alive?

You have to kill enemies to see the victory screen. This means every player's portrait must be cracked in the diplomacy window. Human's disconnecting from multiplayer games don't change the simulation state (so the game can be saved and transfered). This means their planets are still around so they haven't officially "lost" the game, even though they are no longer in it.

I've just been getting a big white box, with a dialog box inside asking if I want to keep playing or quit. Wasn't sure if this was a missing graphic bug or something. Happens whether I win or surrender.

There should be a nice picture in the background of it.

Odd.

I really only have seen that screen once, even counting non-LAN games where I controlled every single planet controllable, every single ship that was not mine dead, etc. The game even gives me achievements for winning (e.g: winning as TEC, winning as Advent, etc.) but I don't get the screen.

Maybe I'll see it more often in this patch.

Winning isn't very eventful I will give you that. I wish a little cutscene played or something, like when you win in one of the Total War games.

Yeah, I get a white box too. It's so disappointing, I've spent all that time, and the only victory condition I get is a white box?! A video would be even better.

People that get a white screen, do you use Vista? Because Vista seems to be a reoccurring source of problems for this game. Just wondering if there's some kind of connection.

So after numerous defeats and victories. I've discovered that the white screen of victory (or defeat) isn't really race specific or consistent. I get a white screen occasionally but sometimes I get a nice normal screen.

I get the white box, but if I start a game and surrender, I get the pic, so I think it's memory related.

even moo2 had cutscenes for ingame events and victory/defeat, would be nice if this game had a few.

When you win there should be a sudden outbreak of your colonies going dead! And then you send your fleet to investigate and they don't come back :O

That's actually pretty cool...

Doesn't that go with the Vasari background?

I've surrendered a bunch of times (looking at the preset maps), and sometimes I get a blank screen and sometimes I don't, for all races. It just seems to randomize between pic and no pic. I really have a feeling it's a Vista thing...

Huh, I'm using Vista and the victory screen seems to show up fine for me.

Then again, if it's intermittent it could work fine 100 times and then not on the 101th, so can't really draw any conclusions from that.

I got a white box for victory screen (vista32) until I applied the KB940105 patch. This cleared up some occasional crashes on large maps.

I fully agree that there needs to be an interesting finale to an epic 6+ hour battle. Understandably they have a small team and I'm happy to see them focus their resources on game-play rather than beauty shots.

What are some other options for victory scenes?

We mentioned cut-scenes. Even some 2.5D cinematic shots like the intro where you animate a few layers of a flat painting to give it some life would be a large improvement. This would likely take one of their top artists a week per race. That is development time not used to create new in-game assets like new cruisers, outposts, etc.

A full 3D animation showing the orbital bombardment of the last remaining enemy planet from the view of a citizen would give a great sense of scale to the game. This would be extra $$$ and it doesn't seem as if they have the artists on staff to pull this off. This would divert major financial resources by contracting out to another studio. Conversely they could create a few staff positions and add more cinematic elements to the release of Sins before transitioning most development to the expansion. Higher quality visuals will allow Ironclad to bring in a whole new segment of the mass market.

Normally I don't advocate blatant beauty mongering but in this case Sins is an incredible game which can be taken to another level with simple cinematic tricks and an increased focus on aesthetic design.
