Tech Tree and Gray soup

For us, less savy computer people... could someone explain how to print the tech tree or point me in the right direction. I can't find a link for it. (and yes, i attempted to look it up in the directory).

Also, I am still on my first game and i hate the grey soup... I understand why its there but even after i send ships to explore it comes back... Is there something I need to research? (Its really ugly! , black would have been better IMO)

Thanks again

I'm not sure if you can print the tech tree straight from the game files. There were a couple of large .jpeg versions of the tech tree posted a while ago, but the thread has been buried.

As for the gray soup... First of all there are two types of "soup": thick and thin. When a region is completely unexplored, you will not be able to see anything - not planets, not stars, nada. Once it has been explored it will still revert to fog of war (thin soup) when you have nothing within sensor range, but you will still be able to see the planets and stars. Eventually, if you have good enough espionage, you may be able to see your enemy's stuff despite the fog, but otherwise you're just going to have to get used to it.

As for why Stardock chose gray (although I think officially it's a shade of purple)... black would not work well because the background is black. With black unexplored & fog of war areas, you would never be able to tell visually whether you were really seeing the space and it was empty, or whether you needed to send someone with sensors to see.

I like to build some dedicated sensor ships -- a cargo hull loaded up with as many sensors it will hold, with some drives added (enough to run away if an enemy ship comes too close, which isn't a big problem since they can see so much further). Just a couple of levels of sensors and miniturization will build a ship that can see pretty far. A few should cover all your frontiers, and a few others can light up areas you are particularly interested in.

Then there is the eyes of the universe wonder which takes the soup away completely, but the sensor ship strategy makes more sense to me than researching that.

Are you kidding? Black would have been awful. It the gray in GalCiv II is a major improvement over the black in GalCiv I. How would you be able to tell visible space from “fogged” space if both were black.

I would imagine you're hoping to find a Tech Tree with the descriptions on it of what each Tech does. I haven't seen one like that yet. I have managed to import the xml files into excell but they require a lot of cleaning up.

Meanwhile I'll bet if you used the searched function on the left side of the forum page and typed , Tech Tree, into it you would find what you're looking for.

Here's 2 links I quickly found using that method:

Wha...? When did they add the search feature? We've been asking for a search option for what seems like forever.
