Thanks for responding to the public and including notes explaining the judges' decisions :)
StillWater Skins
Yes, but my point is that skinning within limitations creates unique difficulties of its own. Modern skinners have to face these types of difficulties with the PL and ML windows, but classic skinners have to face them with every window - and the main window is by far the trickiest. Freeform skinners, as the name states, have much more freedom. Hence, in some respects (not all, but some) they actually have a much easier task than classic skinners. That is why I totally disagree that you can ma
Sure, making a modern skin is probably more time-consuming and difficult. But don't underestimate the different skills that are required to make a good classic skin. For example, I've seen quite a few modern skins which look fantastic...until you open the PL or ML windows. Those windows have more limitations, and it takes different skills to be able to work with limitations like that successfully. Skills which a good classic skinner has developed, but not ever modern skinner has. But for me,
"This judging is taking so long, I'm not even coming to this site on a regular basis anymore." (posted by Brother Rabbit). Well, I'm sure many will see that as a good thing, since you seem to have done nothing but abuse and insult people since you came. ;)
In no particular order: BUNKER- Easily one of the most unique and well-crafted wa skins of the competition. If people didn't have such a bias towards modern skins, this one would probably be one of the dominating skins of the comp. Sure, it didn't require any coding, but it's gonna run better than any modern skin ever will anyway, so who cares, and it looks as good as any of them P :) ENKERA: Will probably end up being one of the most memorable skins of the comp. D-R: A very solid hifi
There's one thing I must ask though: how did a classic skin wind up in the top 5 of "best power user", yet none into "most usable"? That's just plain weird.
VAG: Yeah, I guess maybe they do. Though it would cost thousands of dollars, would be way harder to organise, would probably make the judging process take way longer, and at the end of it, knowing life, people would still be complaining about the results - so I don't know if it would be worth their while LOL I'm glad you agree about the classic skins. Actually, if the GUI continues to expand in the future, I think it would make it a lot more fun to include other 'minor' events, like for sysme
Also, I have a suggestion. For next time, I think you should either: (a) create 1 separate event for classic winamp skins -or- (b) scrap classic skins altogether and accept only modern skins I say this because I'm sure I'm not the only classic skinner that was disappointed to see how poorly the classic skins went. Especially since there were a few brilliantly crafted classic skins like ripe's "Bunker" skin, for example. This is NOT a whine directed towards the judges, because previou
Plague: Yep, I totally agree that each category should have had a comprehensive description released to the skinners before the contest began. I assume that the judges have some sort of criteria that they have to follow. If so, then this list should have been published before the contest is over. VAG: yeah, but no matter how many judges are involved, each one would still have to look at (in this case) 100+ skins for each category. Every judge would need to look at every competing skin. Oth
Plague, I don't see why you didn't like the fact that the skinners had to choose the categories so much, although I can see some good sides of what you're proposing (that each skin enters every category). However, consider this: there are over 100 WB skins. You can imagine how much time the judges hace already had to put into judging, and you can see it by how late the results have been. If the judges had to go through 100+ skins with a fine-tooth comb for every single category, that would j
I personally disagree with a lot of the decisions too, but I certainly won't start kicking up a fuss about it here. Why? Because I've organised a skin contest myself before (though not as large as this one, of course!). And one of the things that I learnt very quickly was that people will always whine and moan about the judges' decisions. Frankly, I don't envy the position of the judges and organisers of this thing at all! :D Everyone has different tastes, and everyone pays extra attention to
Frogboy, are you saying that the judges purposely read the news posts so that they can be influenced by the public's opinions? That's a bit bizzare, isn't it? 8-o

No offence, plague, but I don't see how a skin author could be the sole person in the world who didn't realise that his skin was a good power-user skin. Think about the real Olympics. The athletes don't just rock up and find out on the day which events they'll be participating in, do they? ;) Please listen to VAG, people. There are many things that could be discussed, but discuss them in the forums. Let's not everybody air our dirty laundry here on the front page!
Obviously many will disagree with me, but I think that few modern skins can even compare to classic skins when it comes to everyday-usability, for the following reasons: -Few modern skins, in my opinion, have a design that comes close to the tight, intuitive component layout that Nullsoft perfected with their classic layout. -Classic skins use a fraction of the resources of modern skins. And after all, winamp is 90% of the time used as a background app - so it has to compete for resources
No doubt the moderators will pump them out before the relevant events begin. So, for example, I'm sure we'll see several winamp skins going for "most usable" published all in a row in the next 24 hours. It's just my speculation, but I'm sure that if you get the skins in before the day of the event, you'll be fine.
As long as you submit it before the events you are entering, it should be fine. I think the moderators will make sure that all the relevant skins are processed before the judging for an event starts.
There are 7 judges or so. Obviously, it will take time to coordinate all of them and to get them all to analyze and judge the many entries, especially since each of these judges have lives outside of the olympics, so BE PATIENT, PEOPLE!!!!!! ;) Also, to respond to what some others have said: Frankly many of the modern skins so far have quite bad usability in my opinion, but that's what tomorrow's "most usable" event is for... :)

What? When is the due date for the submissions? I thought that you could send them in just before the events you're participating in begin - if that's true, then all winamp skinners have more than 2 full weeks left...
I totally agree with you MindlessPuppet that many people have been leaning towards the safe and popular designs than the really original and unusual ones (in all 3 categories, I would say, not just windowblinds). But DLieburn never actually adressed that in his/her post. Not explicitly anyway.
As with all of the articles posted here so far, this was useful and interesting reading :)
Not everyone has a 21" CRT sitting on their desk. These little LCD's don't have the high contrast capability. You gotta make you skins look good for everyone, or just keep it to yourself. What ridiculous reasoning! So, because some people have laptops, skin auth
Just wanted to say that I uninstalled and re-installed, and the program works fine . Though it still causes a fatal error if you use a position bar BMP that is larger than the allowable one. You should really mention the allowable dimensions of the position bar BMP in the 'how to make a bootskin' documentation! :)
The Bootskin webpage says: "There is no risk of having your system unable to boot due to a corrupted file or after applying a service pack." Well, that's not enirely true. I made a bootskin which worked fine in the bootskin preview window, but I think I made the progress bar BMP too big (I couldn't find any info about the allowable dimensions anywhere). Anyway, I resetted the computer, and Windows XP came up with an error and wouldn't load up at all. It was no big deal of cou
