Game crashes shortly after being started in Galactic Civilizations II GalCiv2 Forums

I updated my copy of GalCiv 2 today, both the game executable and the multimedia updates. That is where the problems started. Both galciv and the gcconfig program ceased working, the gcconfig problem telling that the file d3dx9_27.dll file was missing - it wasn't.
