Joe, this exact thing happened to me. Quite frustrating that you cannot break the alliance. I reported this in the bug forum, but I'm afraid it's buried with the 300+ other posts... lesson: do not ally with any minor race until it is fixed.

There is a bug when allying with minor races. I allied with the I-League and was then unable to break the treaty, no matter how many times I pressed the "break alliance" command button. As a side-note, every time I pressed the button, the picture in the lower-left changed from the I-League icon to a picture of the Altarian ambassador.

I haven't posted here before, but I'll throw in my two cents. The REASON I purchased this game without a demo and without a major publication review was BECAUSE of the updates. Before GalCiv, I never purchased a game where the content was enhanced for reasons other than play-balancing or bug-fixing. When I read how the AI was being modified based on results from Metaverse, the deal was sealed. When I bought the game, it was at version 1.02x, and within a few days I was updating to version 1.
