How does influence work? in Galactic Civilizations I Stardock Forums

I don't understand why my influence is always dwarfed by the aliens. Even at the start of the game (before starbases) they have a much bigger area. I usually only own the sectors with my planets, and the AI owns everything else. How do they gain influence over empty sectors?

I'm not sure, but I think that the Technologist faction may have a bug in it. If you lose the election, then there is an espionage penalty (-20% I think). However, when you win, there is no gain. I'd have to check to make sure.
