Took all the advice. I know the changelog promised improvements in performance, but I am always wary of beta material. In any case, I was overly cautious. Performance has been almost on par with DA 1.61, even with all the improvements. The gameplay tweaks are fantastic. Still not upgraded to 1.8C until I am sure none of the reported errors won't apply to me. Looks like I will have no choice but to buy the new expansion (and plan the next upgrade of my computer). I am hooked.

Thanks, I'll try it out, with the archive back-up.
Hesitant to ask and start another complaint post, but here goes (Seems we are all walking around on pins and needles this week!). I would like to update to 1.8 A of B or whatever is available. Trouble is I have an older PC and I am not building my next one until next summer when Vista has a patch or two behind it. I'm on version 1.61 which was a godsend, and smoothed out all the version 1.5 performance issues (just like frogboy promised) for my current Athalon 1700 and NVidia 6600GT (factory
I agree completely. The sheer number of gameplay improvements for a program we have already paid for is amazing. On top of this, Stardock is committed to tightening up the coding to ensure the smoothest possible experience for all gamers. When I revisit my other 4X TBS games, I keep coming right back to GalCiv 2 as the most complete experience possible. Of all the forums I monitor for different games, this is the only one where I feel truly connected to the company at all levels. I smile
[quote]Here's a philosophical issue. Do we really need to so radically alter the gameplay we're used to over the last year+(re: nerfed planet count) to enable people to run gigantic maps on "low end machines"? Shouldn't people have reasonable expectations of their hardware? Do we need to make sweeping changes to the majority of players, so that someone can play gigantic maps on their PDA somewhere? Since the net effect of these changes seems to be we're all playing with less planets, wouldnt it
Nice to see some recent activity here. I have been working my way through the various races, trying to get the every-race victory medal. Scores still in the 20K+ area, but not too shabby since my system won't handle huge galaxies and my lax gameplay can't yet handle the extreme difficulties that some of you experts shrug off. I had to laugh at Embird telling us all not to worry about great whites. So typical of the Aussies to make light of what the rest of the civilized world considers a ter
A number of very good books and series listed above but I don't see mine. Tactics of Mistake by Gordon R. Dickson. In my opinion the best storyline about breakaway colonies from Old Earth. The book covers the rise of The Dorsai, an evolutionary path of earth colonists whose ground fighting skills see them rise as mercenaries to the other colonies. A number of books in the Dorsai series, all of which are quite good. My custom race in DL was patterned off the Dorsai, with many soldier
I concur. I'm currently in Winnipeg, going through our two months of mosquito season before winter hits again. I have lived in almost all of the major centres from Halifax to Victoria, but will admit that after my year in TO I was really ready to leave that part of the country to hardier folk. I have trouble establishing major production planets as they remind me too much of the industrial heartland of southern Ontario!
Olde Manne here, with apologies to Oldstatesman, my moniker was chosen to suite me not to steal from him. I'm 48 and a Canadian so this looks like the empire for me. I've been playing and lurking for about a year and a half on my son's computer, and finally caved a month ago and bought my own version. Not much of a player, just love the gendre and having fun. Been playing strategy games forever and my first computer games on an Apple II many moons ago. I'd love to join the old-timers here.
