Wow, thanks for the awesome advice guys, I have some serious stuff to mull over and try out. In response to MarshallOneil, I usually play in a Large Galaxy, with +50 to Economics, +1 to Speed, and Luck. I usually go for a balanced build policy on all my planets, and I tend to purchase everything without installments. Also, I had no idea that players received a 100% population boost for having 100% approval. That right there could go a long ways to allieviate my frustrations.

Ok, this is a first for me, I don't usually post on forums very often, but I'm at the end of my rope. I have been playing Galciv2 ( no expansion ) infrequently since it came out, and never had any problems whatsoever, I was always able to kick the AI's butt. Ok, this happens to me on all my games, and I am really getting sick of it; I push the end turn button, and instead of advancing my research, filling my treasury, and granting movement points, all I get is more moves for my ships. There have been times where I was depending on getting a certain technology the next turn to advance my strategic position, but my research bar stays unchanged, and grants my and the AI more movement points, and the bad guys are able to screw me over because I lack a
