Tech build order?

What do you do?

I am having a blast with this new beta.

What build order do you guys use for tech? I seem to be getting outpaced in research alot.

Thanks!

Check the stats on your opponents... You'll find that most of them start with a major tech advantage over you.

I always aim for uni translators then the research bonus and then weapons

I research Xeno Labs first, then Propulsion/Ion Drive, then Univ Communicators. Doing the research box first gives you a slightly improved initial research rate.

I research the lowest of the research, factory, or econ branch until I'm at Factories/Fesearch Centers/Trade Centers. I might go to Enhanced Factories/Research Academies before branching out my research, though.

The idea is, I need the research line to be able to place the research buildings, the factories to build the labs, and money to pay for it all.

Usually, I've fallen behind in the tech race at this point because I'm working on a little of everything here, but once I get up, I usually research a tech that the AIs will want and then trade it for all the techs they got while I was off establishing my industrial/research base. Once that happens, I'm the tech leader for the rest of the game, even during times of war.

A few things to note. Research is based almost entirely on the number/level of the labs, with population not playing a part, unlike GC1. So, any planet I get that is too small to have a decent manufacturing base or tax base will get one starport and the rest gets filled in with research improvements. I do this with all PQ4 planets, and most PQ5 planets as well unless I'm seriously cash-crunched. PQ6-9 are usually dedicated to tax base, so the only research that happens there is if a research bonus tile pops up.

Second note, with two exceptions, research spread out all over the place works as well as concentrated research, if not better. The two exceptions are the Tech Capitol and Omega Research Lab superprojects. Usually, I'll pick one of my larger planets, preferably the largest one that got a research bonus, and other than a starport, 2-3 factories, and those two superprojects, build nothing but my best research improvement. You can get insanely large research numbers from a PQ 19 planet with a 50+ research bonus for colonization event, both superprojects, and 13 Discovery Spheres.

is it worth building starports on planets without any factories? i mean they can build a ship once every 20 turns at best and thats for a really cheap ship and by the time its built its either obsolete or useless becaseu the situation that it was needed for is past. wouldnt it be better to just put in more market places or reasurch centers?

I don't do research.I build the economy and just buy it all from dumb aliens.

Reasearch yellow and blue. Then trade for the rest of it. I don't use military so I don't concern myself with the red ones. I only build 2 starports.

Yes, as you can buy ships at starports. Funny how many times one of the AIs has lost a starbase on a resource, and the only planet I had that was close was a low PQ planet. It also matters in that it may take a long time, but at least the planet is capable of building its own defending ships, or I can panic-buy them in emergencies.

Besides, during much of my game, I've got almost every colony cranking out constructors or colony ships, and a few core planets cranking out my military ships, and ever little bit helps on the constructors/colony ships.

Ashbery, sounds reasonable, but I'd rather be the tech leader than tied for it It's fun being a Star Federation when everyone else is an Interstellar Republic, and only that because I traded Interstallar Republic to them for what techs they went after that I didn't. Aiming to be a tech leader works best if you aim at techs that the AI will consider important, but not high priority early on. Advanced/Master Trade, various terraforming techs, government stuff, etc.
