On drugs

After reading little whip’s « How People Become Homeless » article i started thinking a bout drugs and how they destroy the lives of many. But sometimes, these lives are already broken before they even start the drugs.

It saddened me what people put themselves (and the ones that are close to them) through to have their next fix. Nothing else matters anymore, not a nice house, not a job, not even their kids if they happen to have them.

So where does the problem come from? From the fact that there are addictive substances out there? Well partly yes. Young people in their I’m-invincible-and-hot state of mind tend to want to try and taste every thing and peer pressure doesn’t help.

But most of the time there is an existing problem and the loads that this people carry has become to heavy to bear.I’m thinking of alcoholics for example. There’s a French saying that goes “boire pour oublier” (to drink in order to forget).

So what should be done?
*Find and destroy the drugs and those who make a living out of it? At least the drugs being a temptation to kids will be solved. But there is always going to be a moron out there to start all over again and become rich out of other’s people misery. Plus there are other things that can become a drug when you’re low: alcohol, cigarettes, casinos even jobs (isn’t ‘workaholic’ a word?).
*Or reach out to those who need help now, before they get into more trouble? If they’re carefree and if they know they can lean on someone, the drugs issue would probably not even cross their mind. I guess it’s like suicide really, except in the case of addictions you kill yourself slowly…

I suppose both should be done. But gosh, that’s a helluva lot work…

i was a lil bit confused by your title...i thought you were announcing you were on drugs. if that had been the case, i was going to point out the folly of destroying your supply should you ever decide to quit using, and suggest you send it to me so i could make sure nothing got wasted. except for me.

yes, workaholic is a word, an american one at least!

I'm no expert on drug addiction having not ever in my life been addicted to anything. But I've seen the damage it has done to others, friends and all.

People become addicted for different reasons. when I used to party hard I had a choice, use drugs like everyone else was doing or not at all. I chose not to. Why? Because I didn't need drugs to make me happy or to forget my problems. I guess my drug of choice was alcohol, that's always manageable, to me anyway. My drinking habit was thankfully only a social one.

The thing is, it's not easy to say this person became addicted to drugs for such and such a reason. You never know why they do it. Some started taking drugs as a fun thing to do, some become pressured into using, and others like you mentioned, have personal problems they want to forget; and then unfortunately become addicted. It's always up to the individual to realize they want to make the change in their lives as Whip pointed out in her article. Many times addicts don't see the need to do so and they continue as they are. The sad part is when there are other people involved, kids, parents, siblings, who watch their family member slowly die from drug use. That's always the hurtful part.

Haha! I just realize now that it's not a very good title for the content of the article indeed!

Naughty....

I think it's in that case that peer pressure is envolved. Kids always like to tease those who keep it clean.

There's only that much reasons to someone taking drugs, isnt it?

*sigh* you can only wish they hadnt tried it at all in the 1st place.

I agree. You cant decide to harm yourself without a close net of individuals around you geting hurt in the process as well.

An excellent article. People do have to take responsibility for themselves, but unless they get the sort of support Little Whip is providing her friend, there is no chance of that happening. People usually take drugs for a reason. Even if it seems like they're just doing it to have fun, if they had other ways of having fun, they wouldn't go to the drug method.

I guess for teenagers it's a way to supposedly affirm their personnality by doing totally outrageous things that they were taught to stay away from. You know, a rebellious kind of thing.
An excellent article.

Thanks
