Vanity, skins, etc.

Vanity, skins, etc.

I'm looking at all of these Object Desktop themes and all I see are a bunch of beveled, rounded, big sloppy edges. This is definitely not eye-candy. I'm not much for making these themes or I'd do it myself, but I'd like to see something with flat, plain, smooth edges streamline and futuristic without the mess and garbage. Simplistic. You know what I mean? For example, everyone is raving over this "Killer Suite" but I took one look at the dock that was made and saw this ugly bubbled out mess of a creation. I want transparency, smooth, streamline and FLAT plains with hover effects and shadows. If someone could do this, I'm positive they'd get much more of a positive reaction out of these people than what these guys throwing out these bubbled garbage heaps are getting. Someone hook me up so I can have a good desktop. After all.. I paid money for OD.

In my opinion, I wouldn't put most of pixtudio's work on my desktop if someone paid me to do it. It's too much. Take a look at the work "Zippo" and please, don't tell me it's not over-saturing and lacking contrast. This is my point. The reason these people are getting hired by companies for graphic design work is because of the lack of originality to choose from.

I'm going to tell everyone exactly why I don't like a lot of the work here. The reason I started skinning and playing around with the Windows XP GUI was to change the original commercial look of everything and give it something thats worth looking at. A lot of what I see on here is going along the same lines as what Windows XP originally looked like. Too bubbly and commercialized.. No wonder these companies are sponsering them. But atleast XP GUI had contrast.. I see a lot of these 'top' skinners and it seems to me like they know graphic design but they don't know good taste. It could possibly look pleasing to the eye, but it seems like they're missing something. Anyway.. Everyone knows what they say about opinions.

oh yes, now, whenever we talk about new skins, now we say "better not make it look like bubbly *hit because we know how many people have the same mind as hellish. so we try not to make any more bubbly *hit skins to please those people. who cares if we like to make them, better not because some people are tired of them... <- i am speaking for all skinners.

I'm not saying that.. Make all of the bubbly skins you want. Don't pay so much attention to what I'm saying. I'm not important at all. It's just the personal opinion of one person, so don't worry about it so much. I'm just an opinionated S.O.B. and I'm not afraid speak my mind. But who really cares? I'm not important.

Hmm, in regards to Zippo, I guess that 21,000 people downloading it in less than a month are wrong and you are right. You are the only one with good taste and everyone else has bad taste. Hmm. You make me laugh.

All you are blowing is negative hot air. Where are your skins, Mr. Super Star Critic? You come here and try to tear down the community, and the skinners and all its members? I guess we should learn something by your name.

lot of what I see on here is going along the same lines as what Windows XP originally looked like.

Hmm, could that be because the skins use the WindowsXP Gui shell? Nevermind, I'm not going to play your game anymore. Have fun.

hellish i appreciate how you've turned around to become proa-ctive, and productive for the cummunity.. please remember though how free this place is to express creativity and how many people have different levels of skills, tastes, and what is appropriate. i say this because many people are still hurt by the attitude you came at us with.. i can say the skinners here are a knit virtual group.. they stick up for each other's work in ways that most people, who know each other in physical life, don't. thus the backlash you'll get from many people. what am i getting at? you've backed up your opinion and your right to an opinion, so please move out of the 'dare to speak my mind' language and move on to the 'what can I do to make something I want' language, if only just to avoid setting off some hairy triggers

you might equate many skins here to the styles of video game players - whilst i get the impression you're more of a streamlined, simple, all-about-functionality-and-not-flash type of person. i'm the same way.. i take function over design and for that reason i've had the same basic object bar and dock on my desktop since day one. if i could skin, maybe you'd like my stuff. but i don't.. and since i know i'm one of a minority of people who like that design, i'm not suprised there are few things here i would use. but i won't lash at the artists here because the don't have my tastes.. what i see here is still far beyong anything i've seen elsewhere and i'm happy with what i have been able to get.

long story short i hope this is all over now and you'll find many people here are very skilled, and are great people to know.. you won't find that out though if you play the maverick just for kicks

You have the right to state your opinion, that's fine. But no one owns the rights on TASTE
You should consider uploading a few of your own skins to the library(0 at the moment), and let us see your version of taste Or one better put a skin up in the GUI Contest

DesignCaddy, That's exactly what I'd like to do. I totally understand the family enviornment of the community and I'd like to turn it around and try to mend what damage I've done and be more of a friendly, productive aspect in the community. I would like to start skinning and throwing out some designs for all to see, but only time will tell. Anyway, you guys can dog on me with my first few skins considering how much of an a55 I've been. I'm actually looking forward to the abuse. But I think I may be able to surprise atleast a few of you with some of the idea's I have. Thanks for being understanding. I really appreciate that.

In a word, no.
Your point contradicts itself by implying Zippo falls into the 'unoriginal' bracket, then you say Pixtudio (And others similar) only get hired to create original things.
Skins offered here are for personal use only, not companies to pick and use as they like.
The reason skinners are hired by companies is to make custom tailor-made skins designed how the comapny wants it.

Anyhoo, if you do decide to try your hand at skinning, any stuff you release will be very welcome.
It's already clear that anything you may submit (Even if it's a first attempt) will likely not be the usual rehash of whatever fad is in at the moment. And the skinning scene definitely needs more people who can do that.
Good luck, and I'm actually looking forward to seeing how your ideas turn out.

Hellish911 - In my opinion, the problem here is not that you have different taste to other people who have been making skins, so much as the way you've expressed you opinions as facts time after time.

You could have stated your views like this:

"As well as all the excellent hard work that people have done creating skins already, I'd like to suggest that there could be alternative styles which I for one would prefer to see, and could prove very popular. Here are my ideas...."

Instead, paraphrasing, you state it as "All this stuff is rubbish and lacking imagination and style because I say it is and that's the only thing that counts. I want to see things in a different style and anyone with a different taste has no taste."

That isn't just stating an opinion, it's claiming absolute authority to make pronouncements on taste.

You've then exacerbated it all by "apologising" in such a way that you continue to make such arrogant, egotistical pronouncements whilst ostensibly being contrite.

I'm only posting this to hopefully point you in the direction of improving your social skills rather than commenting on your particular opinions on the skins here....if you wish to be part of a community, you can't expect to dictate you views and think people will just accept it as fact. By all means offer opinions and suggestions, give constructive critisism about specific works, and you'll stand a good chance of inspiring people to create the different things you seem to have in mind.
