I think this issue has taken a turn on the right path.
Baker has pointed out interesting facts and the fact that you are now including a disclaimer shows good iniciative for a positive acceptance.
Kona, I appreciate the fact that you took time to convert and share this OD icons and I hope you get more encourage to create icons of your own.
On another note, and on a constructive suggestion. I would like to see these icons uploaded as a pack. I think they will have more appeal than individual uploads.

AP67......Looks like you and i were thinking the same thing.
Encouragement with some helpful suggestions. Your post was just the sort of thing i hoped would happen as i would love to see Kona go onto better things

Kona.....take your time and concentrate on quality and not quantity. To achieve this you may have to revise your software needs but AP67's suggestion sounds good on the packs

i just uploaded a pack of command and conquer icons. all 7 in one download.

actually that was quite fun.

I am now working on my own icons with gimp. steep learning curve.

If you haven't, I would suggest going to Susan kare's site and look at the evolution of icons. Start with simple symbols, and work your way up to creating depth and perspective.

Also, take a look at the Pixel Art category over at DeviantArt. I think a lot of the skills that iconists once had to have building an image pixel-by-pixel are now being used by pixel artists. There are some really extraordinary things in the Pixel Art section over there.

Thats nice BakerStreet that should help Kona a great deal.

Kona........if i can add another one to BakerStreet's good guides. Marvilla does some great walk through guides where you can just sit and watch as as the process happens ongoing in front of your very eyes. I found these very helpful.

Here's the link http://www.marvilla.us/tutorials.html

I did lots of pixel-by-pixel icons back in the bad old days of Dos and its various 'shells'- GUIs.....I should try and hunt them down....

Kona that set looks sweet. Keep going

Leo that link is great. I read the tutorials before I started making OD icons. They really help me a lot

this thread is great, man somebody ought to write a book or make a movie about it, its like a shakespeare play with a happy ending. The confusion and happiness, falling into the brink of madness only to revive and lift up into the beauty of light. it brings a tear to my eye

Eek...I'll have to load one of the old GUIs into a dos window in VMWare just to access them....the format is 'icu', not ico...and it's a very limited 16 colour palette....
I must say, some of those 'old' 16 colors icons are pretty good.
I had a set a while back based on the comodore 64, but my hard drive crashed and lost everything >

I guess its too late to ask for a Train Simulator game icon.

Just playing with ya!

I wondered about this making icons from the originals without any alterations.

I guess one or two are OK (Like a MSN instant messenger or Yahoo!) but don't get crazy with it.

Since I have been looking deeply at Chad Ross's work for a little article I am writing, I find that he re-invents the icon most of the time into something else (sometimes totally into something else).

...

So about the Train Simulator icon...

It can have an Acela look (Amtrak Acela), or maybe a diesel cargo engine.

Or just go old school and do a choo-choo train.
