we get our ore from overseas, and 1 plant has already been shut down due to mergers. But I doubt they will move all production overseas.

not really. man has done more to harm this planet then any other form of life. things like pullution, cloning, cutting down rain forests, genetic research, mutatations... all of that man has done or is doing and the planet is suffering.

Regardless of wether its ethical or not, how does cloning harm the planet? Why not clone some more trees for that deforestation problem?

I would also like to bring to your attention that genetic research not only feeds much of the planet but it also provides solutions to pullution. Very much of the food you eat on a day to day basis is a GMO or genetically modified organism. While many people preach the supposed side effects of these GMOS they forget that without these price of food would be a lot more than what you see now today. Genetics also helps clean up oil fields by using genetically modified bacteria to decompose the oil. There is also research being done to creating organisms that will help decompose garbage more quickly.

Also, mutation is a very natural part of life. It's how organisms adapt to their surroundings over great periods of time. Mutations are what cause some certain people to be immune to life threatening diseases such as HIV. But its a double-edged sword. Mutation is also what causes cancer and its also what allows disease causing bacteria and viri to evolve and become resistant to treatment. The statement that man is accountable for natural things like mutation is just not valid considering. And considering all the resources out there about these topics, it really disheartens me to read such ill-educated remarks.

Mother nature will only put up with so much before she |3i7C|-| slaps us all out of existence. But then we're getting into apocalyptic type stuff. Heck the whole of the US East Coast line could be changed dramatically with a single suitcase nuke placed in a fault that runs along a semi-dormant Volcanic Island right off the African Coast. It would cause almost a third of the Island to slid into the Sea which would cause a Tsunomi(spelling) something like 600 to 700 feet tall moving over 600 mph to head to the West. When it hit the Americas it would reach as far north as New York and as far south as mid South America. They claim it would travel up to 100 miles in land in lower areas and totally change the coast line.

Also wouldn't it have to pass the mountain range before it got that far East (like New York) even at 600 miles per hour?

I think we will feel the wind that would come from such a action though, but the water I am not to sure. Plus, isn't there another mountain range before you get to New York? Wouldn't the Mississippi river absorb allot of what would pass the mountain range on the west coast (what is left of it)?

Cloning is like photocopying a life form. An exact copy wont effect the food chain. We can use cloning for such things as preserving life by sustaining certain species on the planet and keeping the food chain in correct balance. I would say that we should try and stop killing off species, but we can't go back in time and fix past mistakes like endangering a species very easily.

I think youre more thinking along the lines of how does genetics affect the balance of things. Yes, we rushed into genetics and caused some problems. If anyone is familiar with this type of science, one notable instance of a mistake was BT corn. A genetically modified type of corn engineered to resist insects. Not only did it resist them, but tests showed that the milkweed leaves (the primary diet of monarch caterpillars) that were heavely dusted with BT corn pollen became sick. The scientists who did this study assumed that because of this, BT corn was a risk to monarch butterflies. This is the type of effect I think you're referring to. Tests later done by the USDA proved that BT presented little to no risk towards monarchs.

But genetics is growing by leaps and bounds and geneticists are much more careful about the possible side effects of genetically engineered organisms on other life on the planet.

Somewhere around 70% of the worlds crops are GMO's. Btw.
