I like the ship battles, and before Origins was released I was sort of against custom user made ships. However I like how their ship editor works, and how this is setup, so now I REALLY want the custom ships in multi player. What I do not like is the limited editor... obviously they are still working on it, but it leaves me to constantly think of how it could be better. This is a copy paste from a text file I am tossing ideas into every now and then.
IDEAS FOR CUSTOM SHIP EDITOR
BASE PERFORMANCE LEVELS: ADDS:
The Small Medium Large would be done away with, too limited.
The Choice of 3 or 4 engines/thrusters would be done away with.
Instead these would be Adjustable by 1 each, to give custom ships more diversity.
Some Costs would increase as more are added and a bigger discount for going below nominal.
numbers are just samples, as I don't know the scale of unit variables.
Points could be fractional of a point, and round up in final total.
These would be slide bars or +/- or something like that...
+4 CREW +1 Mass +3 Size +? Points
+4 FUEL +3 Mass +1 Size +? Points
+? ACCELERATION +2 Mass +2 Size +? Points

Mass = Gravity Effect on Ship & Reduces Final Acceleration
Size = Scale of Ship & Reduces Final Turn Rate
These would be added to the ship to increase diversity further.
Added similar to the way we choose and add weapons, but they are not weapons.
These would be Stackable and Multiple Allowed. LIMITS?
Some wil be bonuses that will increase the ship cost, some will be handicaps taken to save on ship points, etc...

UNSTABLE FUEL: BLOWS UP BIG when dies, dont be near it!
IONIC ENERGY: Recharges at full speed when in an ion cloud, but really slow when not. -Points
AMBIENT HEALING: (Constantly and Slowly Heals, as long as has not taken damage recently)
+1 Crew Per XX Seconds +4 Points
PROTECTED: (Good Armor, Extra Shielding, Reduces Damage Taken)
-5% Damage +1 Mass +0 Size +4 Points
Directional Control: (Like: Greegox/Measured/Observer) +2 Points
Immune to Gravity: (Stops dead when not thrusting, Inertial Dampeners, Like Classic Arilou, Could be instant could be slower) +4 Points
Immune to Weapon: -% Damage from Weapon_BlahBlah
Rammer: Does Damage when contacting other ship/asteroid/weapon (Androsynth)
Hostile Aura: Does Damage when in Proximity to other ship/asteroid/weapon
3rd Weapon: Automated, so user does not control or need a key/button for it, anyweapon but mostly good for Satellites, shield, point defense, self destruct, etc... penalty would be the use of fuel when you may not want it too.
Transforms: overrides 2ndary weapon, Cycles through specified ship types (more than 2?)
Copy Cat: weapon is overridden, and is a copy of the opposing ship's weapon (if primary copies primary, if secondary copies secondary) Possibly transofrms whole ship into opponents ship?
Not Alone: Reincarnation/Reinforcements - When Dies, randomly spawns itself again (Pkunk)
CONSUMES: Will completely eat/consume any ship it runs over that is less than 50% of its own size and mass. (Nom Nom Nom)
