Ascension Crystals when Ascencion Victory is disabled

Do they do anything?

In my current game, I have disabled the Ascencion Victory option, yet I still see the AI grabbing Ascension Crystals.

Do the crystals serve any other function, or is it just that the AI is not programmed to change behavior when that victory type is disabled?

Ascension crystals give additional research to factions with the Ancient trait.  But I suspect that you're correct that the AIs don't change behavior based on victory type.

Thank you :-) I wasn't aware of the bonus to ancient trait civs. Since my current civ has that trait, I better start grabbing those :-)

Another option, which is what I do when I have Ascension Victory turned off, is to set Ascension Crystals to "none" in the Galaxy Settings pre-game. This keeps them from becoming clutter on the map. But Publius is right, and so you may desire to keep them in.
