DLC

It's a little early for this, but I'm curious about DLC/Expansion plans for Galciv3. There have been a few mentions in the dev streams about expansions; does anyone remember what they were? What would you like to see, and do you have any thoughts about smaller dlc or larger, traditional expansions? Chances are good that I'll buy whatever Stardock releases for this game, but it's fun to speculate.

I would like to see 2-4 races added (or returning) in the future, balance permitting. Starbases seem relatively underdeveloped at present, and mining could do with some additional mechanics. Unaffiliated factions (space creatures, anarchists, etc) could shake things up.

Let's see...

This is, by no means, set in stone but only our current plan:

When GalCiv III is finished (next year) its list price will be $49.95.

We expect to release new DLC for it every month for the first couple months and then once a quarter there after. Each DLC will likely be priced at $4.99. I'd expect there to be around 5 DLC released per year.

We also expect to release approximately 3 or 4 major expansions over the next several years for it. This is the main reason we went with 64-bit with GalCiv III -- we can keep enhancing it and improving it for many years because the underlying tech should be expandable for a long time. Those expansions will probably be $20 each.

The lifecycle of GalCiv III should be approximately 7 years (GalCiv II was released in 2006 and its lifecycle was about 4 years, we couldn't do more with it because we ran up against the 2GB 32bit game memory limit).

So basically 7 years of expansions and DLC.

Ideas that have been mentioned for expansions and DLC:
Expansion
-commanders, place them in charge of ships, as they level up they can command fleets, and agents, return of espionage
-starbase designer

DLC
-Snathi as major civilization, with their own tech tree, ship style and a mini-campaign.

It was mentioned in a stream once that they planed to have 16 major civilizations playable by the end of the game's development cycle.

Thanks, I don't know how I missed that. Must be getting old.

All good ideas, too. I'm particularly interested in Commanders.

I know the $100 pack gets you all expansions, does it get the DOCS also?

yep

anything they release for GC3, ever

I'm an old geezer who just went through a quintuple bypass.  At this rate, my GC3 deal may outlast me.

yep, those of us with the Founders Edition (100.00) get everything that comes out for the game automatically.

That's terrible... Best to you.

On a topic-oriented note: They've stated that an awesome Espionage system is one of the already planned expansions.  The ambitions/ideas that they had for it were too big to fit into the original release (recall, the GC2 espionage system was fairly basic).  Needless to say, I'm already looking fwd to this one.  GC3 should be quite the game when everything's said and done - I doubt the Founder's Elite people will regret their purchases...

I think that Paul had alluded to possibly wanting to have more interesting stellar phenomena as a DLC (this was an off-the-cuff aside during a stream and by no means an official plan - but would make sense in the same vein as the Sins planet-pack DLC).

Thanks for the good words everybody.  So far, so good.

It is my impression that they are gathering an informal list of DLC ideas.  Anything that is a "I'd love to do that!" idea should be ending up on that list.  I hope that some the clever/creative ideas I have seen on the forums make their way onto that list as well.  I like Paul's approach that this is a big game engine with hooks for expansions, DLC, modding, etc.  Very promising.

Ideas more customised tech trees. Bringing back lost races through customisation. More campaigns and scenarios. Other victory options. Customised ships. More custom Picts. Added super abilities and abilities. These would make nice additions as you go. More techs, buildings, and Units. I would like to see the developers on their own make custom or modded races on their own for us to download.
