Suggestion: Put more stuff in space.

This is a really simple one. The long rant is below.

PUT MORE STUFF IN SPACE.

In GC2 the map was basically empty and immutable - there were a total of 5 objects: Suns, planets, asteroids, anomalies and ships, 3 of which were completely static(excluding the gimicky death star).

And yet on the scales GC purports to operate, there is SO MUCH STUFF in space.

Nebulas to hide starbases, or from which pirates can pester you.
Asteroid bases to launch pirate attacks from.
Dark matter clouds that can hold rare resources or your doom.
Black holes for navigational hazards(better make sure you have your graviton sensors if venturing into deep space).
Pulsars which can emit GRB's.
Stellar nurseries for the flavor.
The occasional supernova for the excitement.

...and all sorts of others.

Also, for the love of all that's holy - keyboard shortcuts for EVERYTHING! PLEASE!

It's always a mild shock to my system when I transition from Civ to GalCiv.

They're already on it. From the announcement:

"We’re putting new stuff out on the map besides anomalies, because it adds depth to how you explore and colonize the galaxy."

I hope the solar systems will be more realistic; planets orbiting stars. And what about the simple asteroid or comet travelling through space?

I like most of this. I'm not personally into the idea of dark matter clouds, but the rest sounds like it would be fun.

As for pirating, it would be nice if we could designate a fleet as pirates and steal goods from freighters or hold colony ships hostage with some degree of plausible deniability.

o_O

Moving from hex to hex? That would be a curious idea. :O

I dunno whcih way I go. I'm usually happy with more stuff yet I enjoyed the requirement of needing to search to find particular things. When asteroids were introduced I thought they were cool but, at times, it also felt crowded to me.

Space always feels better to me when it's, ya know, space.

Maybe they'll make a separate map for star systems, like in MoO2 or Ascendancy. Well, maybe not like Ascendancy. That one was in 3D. :S

Didn't GalCiv I have separate map for star systems? The GalCiv III map pic we can see used as Media button has the star and its planets around it. But it could be some kind of mock up.

It did, but it was only all of the planets in a row from top to bottom. MoO2's and Ascendancy's map really showed the star system as a whole.

As for the pic on the Media button, I think it is only a mock up.

Na. It wouldn't be hard at all to get the planets orbiting on the sun in the normal map. A little easier with hexes because they make such nice circles. We just shouldn't try and make the stars orbit too. That would get out of hand I think.

The idea of the map moving and changing has some promise. You could have neat things like once every 3 weeks a comment flies buy your empire disabling the shields of every ship it passes buy. You could even have high level technology that allow you to move things yourself.

Distant Worlds does this well.  There's tons of clouds to mine, strange anomolies you can build resort starbases near, just to name two of many.

What nomotog said.

I did think of orbiting planets, but rejected it due to the square grid.

Didn't know about the hex map. Now it's possible and highly advise-able as well. And in light of the hex grid, I doubt we'll see separate star system levels. There's no point really. What we could see is buildable as asteroids and moons(and even orbital space). Ah, the possibilities...

I could elaborate further, but at this point it'd just be idle chatter since I know game production is all about prioritizing and it's best to keep focused.

And yes - also comets. See - there a bunch of other outer-space objects that we have yet to think about.

Maybe the larger comets can be used both as a space hazard and a weapon given sufficient technological advancement or as a depletable resource(but not both - if you mine it out it just becomes too small to pose a threat).

A more dynamic universe makes for more immersiveness  and the math itself is not THAT hard or costly for a modern multi-core PC(the game is gonna be MT after all, better take advantage of that).

mass effect 1 had something in one of their dlc where you were on an asteroid heading to a colonized planet

the idea plop that asteroid in orbit mine the resources out of it and whats left can be used for a shell for a space station

of course the asteroid was hijacked by terrorists who wanted to change its trajectory to impact the colony......

Well, space IS 3 dimensional. I find flat maps are so... flat. Space isn't flat and even if the milky way is a disc, its about 3000-16000 light years thick. Personally, I liked a 3d map like in Ascendency. It's more realistic.
