This game has massive potential

Today I saw a review talking about how this was a "Casual 4x game" suggesting that it being "streamlined" was a good thing because people new to the 4x genre can pick it up as a starting point for other 4x games.

It was an all around positive review, but for a hardcore gamer and 4x vet it was a punch to the stomach. Is that the game Stardock meant to make? A casual 4x game? There's a big difference in my mind between casual and accessible, a game can be accessible without being casual. I bought War of Magic because it was compared to Master of Magic and everything I saw prior to it's release, and everything we were hearing from stardock, suggested it was a true 4x game in the vein of MoM that we would still be playing a decade from now.

Nearly a decade ago Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic was released, to this day it has an active modding community, people are still playing it, and whatever gripes you have about the settler AI, it's been addressed years ago. People still play that game, they still love it, and I think they'll still be playing it another 10 years from now.

This game has the potential to match that and surpass it, but I suspect that if anyone is playing a decade from now, without significant changes they won't be playing for the core game, they'll be playing for a mod.

This game has the potential to be a masterpiece.

"Massive potential" - I keep hearing this expression since Elemental:WOM release. It's usually related to games that people desperately wanted to love, but for various reasons, it was not possible. Just like with Tristan and Isolde.

I'd agree with you if it was any developer other than Stardock.  SD will make the effort to see that FE lives up to it's potential.

I bought it, played a little bit. This is the only tbs in which I no longer want to play. I played probably in most tbs. I started about 50 games, and only one finished. This is a record. On average, after 100 seasons is not fun to play. In the game there is no normal economy. No interesting battles. The game makes it impossible to fight 5 - 6 orders of soldiers. In other words, the strategic part of the game is also at zero.

I have seen many posts where exactly and in fact wrote about the many weaknesses of the game. More people simply remove the game and did not write here. Fine, that is 10-15 players , which in each such post defending the game. But personally, I did not like the game. In all the strategic, economic and tactical aspects.

Hey Zhuk, if you don't like the vanilla, my mod is most often better for you. Seems like when people find the vanilla boring, Master's Affliction is the cure. Just saying.

Does your mod enhance the tactical gameplay?

Yes

For instance, all weapons stay useful throughout the game. The worst thing about tactical battles is that each new weapon is so superior in every way. In my mod, Werewindle and I have made sure each early game weapon stays useful. The result is that early game weapons have special abilities that make them competent for large units in big armies. And then there is the fact that I have about 20 D&D style classes instead of 3. Just ridiculous under-utilization of the mechanic on their part. My mages get class based spells, my archers get special arrows, my fighters get special feats. It's pretty much a crap load of depth added to the tactical. And that is not even considering the superior strategic gameplay.

That sounds pretty cool...where does one find your mod?

Do you enhance faction and sovereign creation?

Sean's Master's Affliction Mod (vanilla on crack): https://forums.elementalgame.com/430587

Heavenfall's Stormworld Mod (content on crack): https://forums.elementalgame.com/421802

I'm a big fan of both. I have a few recent playthroughs where you can hopefully get a feel for how they look and play. Please note Sean's Mod is not for the faint of heart... it's crazy designed by a couple of crazies.

Current MA playthrough: https://forums.elementalgame.com/437029

Completed Stormworld playthrough: https://forums.elementalgame.com/436770

[Edit] In short, with these 2 mods I feel like I can play 3 different games. If I get bored of one, load up a different. Works for me.

I am on the Nexus now. Also, in the FE Modding Forum, Master's Affliction.

Any response to my question about faction and sov creation?  Do these mods add content there too?
