City militia questions

I cannot find these answers in any thread, but more surprisingly I cannot find this in the manual.

I'm probably missing something, but here are my questions anyway:

1. Do cities automatically create militia to defend with? I thought they addressed this in one of the tutorial videos, but I can't seem to find it now.

2. I recently lost a city and when I attacked the next turn, the AI had about three city militia for defense (it couldn't have purchased that many that fast). When the AI attacked me, I had no city militia for defense.

3. Any guidelines on the creation of city militia would be great as there seem to be posts out there asking various questions (specifically is my second question a bug) but little answers. Seems like this would be addressed in the manual or hergomonia (or whatever the in-game help is called).

Thanks!

MM

They're automatically generated by the city when attacked. The bigger the city the more militia units there are, with fortresses adding archers and stat bonuses via the building of walls.

If you open the city details screen it always shows you what you have. At rank two you get 3 crap troops and 1 archer unit. It just goes up from there, but they are all very poorly equipped. Even a rank 4 town will die to a single assassin demon without reinforcements. I am not sure what good they are other than as cannon fodder.

They don't even had a armor as well, yes, they are crap, even 3 level city can't handle normal enemies single troop...

The upgrade that adds a catapult is pretty good though.

They don´t have much armor ... but their attack value is rather high ... if you play it right and your militia troops don´t get massacred before being able to launch their own attacks, they can do quite a bit of damage.

When attacking enemy xities that also means that often I choose to attack the militia troops before attacking any defending regular troops that the enemy has (because those regular troops usually have lower attack values, but higher defense values ... meaning I usually can prevent much more damage to my own troops by attacking the enemy milita first)

Comes with the fort?

There is a city upgrade, maybe just for Pariden that creates a big golem guard, and you can unlock a second one as well, that works pretty well.

It is one upgrade you can choose after leveling the city.

IIRC it is only available for forts and comes with level 3 or 4. I think it is called Watchtower or the like

Thank you all for the quick response on question 1. (Don't you think this would be in the manual or guide pinned at the top?)

But question 2 states how I had a city attacked by the AI and I had zero militia to defend it (oops....forgot to mention that point), yet the AI did have about 3 militia when I attacked the next turn. I had built a mage and had it stationed in the city, but that was the only unit to defend the city? I found a few other posts stated they have had the same issue (no militia in a city to defend it) and was wondering if this is a bug or are we not doing something right.

Oh so maybe it is the magic towns that get the golems. All in all I think maybe better than the forts for defense, unless that is just for Pariden.

This is the second time someone reports that their city did not have militia when attacked.  The first guy was kinda abrasive, and got dismissed by pretty much everyone, including me.  But now that there is a second report, I am starting to think that maybe there's something to it.

Kaiya, when you lost the city, was there a battle?  I know you said you had no militia to defend it, but did you have other troops, and were there more than 8 of them?

If there was no battle, did you lose the city to Kraxis?

If a city is attacked 2 times the same turn the city militia wont generate for the second battle. I understood on Derreck it's not intended, so it's a bug they have either fixed or will fix. I always thought earlier that it was intended.

Ya, it should keep the troops at the health they were at when attacked the first time in the turn.

I agree. They should be regenerated if not dead in the first battle that turn, and with the amount of health they have left after the first battle.

Thank you for the help.

The city had (1) mage stationed inside it. I was only attacked one time (the battle I lost). A tactical battle was played out (almost got him since he only attacked with two units and one of the units was a scout). I rushed a nearby swordsman to the city I lost and attacked the city the turn after I lost it. When I attacked the city, the surviving unit that defeated me was there as well as about 3 or 4 city militia! The AI couldn't have built or purchased multiple units in one turn, so I assume cities get defensive militia units. Except I don't seem to have them when I am attacked by the AI.

This is the second time this has happened to me, and luckily I have the game saved the turn before the AI attacks (which it consistently does). Here is a link from another player who sounds like he/she had a similar problem:

If it helps Stardock I'm happy to supply the savegame file.

Thank you all for your help, I thought I was doing something wrong with my cities, sounds like I just have a bug (although it has happened in two separate games).

Sorry for the double post, but a bit more info about this apparent bug:

I have version 1.01 installed

The city is Level 2

For kicks I moved the mage out of the city before the attack and there was no tactical combat, the city was taken by the AI.

Updated:

I think it may be because the cities I lost were originally AI cities. Perhaps if loyalty hasn't reached a certain point the city militia don't come out for you??

Just a guess...
