Troops upgrading

Was wondering if anyone really knows how this works.  If I make a spearman when I get the tech and then choose for them to upgrade when the next better spear or armor comes out, I do see when I get leather armor the option to upgrade them.  However, when I get boar spear it doesnt seem like they will upgrade.  Im also wondering will I be able to upgrade Spearman all the way to end game wps and armor if I edit the current spearman that I have and keep selecting the upgrade options?  And if so, will this overwrite my lower lvl spearman so that they wont appear in my next game when I start reseraching techs again?

I hope this doesnt sound too noobish to ask, but I just cant seem to figure it out with my units that I make.  I can upgrade them once, but then when the next tech comes I cant...so im just not sure if I need to keep editing my units to upgrade before I get the next tech or if I can upgrade them once then done.  Thanks all!

Well not too sure, only really saw unit upgrading work when I created a custom unit with "Pick best Spears and/or Armour" option, but given I had the crystals and metal and gildar, I was able to upgrade my units several times... Or I am just confusing stuff up.

Sounds right to me. You have to set your unit's equipment upgrade-able at design, selecting the "best available" option with the grey outline and green up arrow.  You can set this piece-by-piece if, for example, you only want armor to be upgrade-able but weapons stay the same.  I've had to do this when some magic research unlocked magic boots that needed crystal and I didn't have crystal so I made that unit just always have leather boots.

upgrading won't over-write your unit's base design since you've just set it to use "best available".

You do have to be in your territory when you upgrade and I think clicking "upgrade" first does your armor and then you have to click it again to upgrade weapons, if available.

Upgrading in this game really sucks. Hopfully they will put some love into this section.

It gets very messy because of how the upgrade system is built.

Note below that I am using terms "Unit Design" and "Trained Unit" as different things. A Unit Design exists in your unit design window, but it is not an actual unit under your command. A Trained Unit is when you select a Unit Design to train and, upon completion, becomes something you can move around on the map.

How to Automatically Upgrade Unit Designs: Create a Unit Design where you select the "Upgrade" option for a Weapon or Armor slot. For example, you can select Upgrade on your 1-hand Blunt Attack category. This Unit Design will always have the latest available 1-hand Blunt Attack weapon, and is updated automatically. So whenever you use this Unit Design to make a Trained Unit, that Trained Unit will come out as having the latest weapon. Because of this two Trained Units from the same Unit Design can have different weapons depending on what was available when they were trained.

How to Upgrade Trained Units: Make a Unit Design where you select the Upgrade option for a slot. Make a Trained Unit out of this Unit Design. Then, when you have a new item unlocked from research, select your Trained Unit and go to its action menus in the lower left part of the screen. You should see "Upgrade Armor" or "Upgrade Weapon". If they are not immediately visible, click the little arrow icons pointing upwards to view all available actions.

Therefore, unless your Trained Unit comes from an Automatically Upgrading Unit Design, you will not be able to upgrade the gear your Trained Unit wears.

If one could only upgrade unit sizes, so that your group of the units could become five and then ten (at a cost of money and reduced exp)

Very good specification of the current system, I wish it was better but this is what I must live with :)

I think it makes perfect sense not to be able to upgrade such units. They'd end up with way too much experience(=level=hitpoints) compared to fresh army units.

If you are interested in modding that particular feature, these tags are in ElementalDefs.xml

<!-- Unit grouping type upgrades -->
        <EnableUpgradeGroup>0</EnableUpgradeGroup>
        <UpgradeGoldCostPerTroop>10.0</UpgradeGoldCostPerTroop>
End of quote

I don't think it would be unbalanced if you make experience proportionnally distributed among the new troop (ex: 3 units with 15 xp becomes a 5 units with 9 xp).

It is normal that keeping troop is rewarded in a certain way. As it is right now it becomes a waste of space (if space was important) to keep high xp unit that doesn't have the maximum number of soldiers in it.

If their exp is halved on upgrading and hitpoints adjusted accordingly, then I dont see the problem.

Thanks for the modding tip. I will save it.
