How To Avoid Eye Strain Due to Your Computer

How To Avoid Eye Strain Due to Your Computer

Figured I’d do something health related. Two suggestions first: This doesn’t come instead of your yearly eye check up, so make sure you get that done. Second, make sure you have an exercise period everyday. Not at the computer. Turn it off and go outside. There really is a world out there.

Ok… number one: Adjust monitor position. The top should be at eye level, and it should be 20-30 inches from your eyes.

Number two: Adjust your lighting. Hopefully, it’s not coming from behind or in front of your monitor. Use a non fluorescent desk lamp… if you can.

Number three: The all important 20-20-20 rule. Every twenty minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This one’s easy to remember… 20/20, right? If you need a reminder, here’s some (PC) freeware: BreakTaker or Mac Time Out .

Number four: Gunnar’s glasses. They cost $60-80 depending where you shop. They were originally developed for gamers or maybe snipers. Maybe night drivers. They cut down glare and neutralize the blue cast screens have naturally. Some folks swear by them.

Number five: Scatter your work materials on your desk. Put your keyboard directly in front of the scree. That way, you’ll be forced to look at places other than your computer screen.

Hope this helps. Take care of them peepers, folks!

Most importantly, choose a monitor with flicker-free backlight. Read this thread:

I have tested multiple monitors and found out modern LED backlit monitor with PWM controlled brightness are a source of immense strain. Consumers worldwide stated to take note, and fortunately, many models with stable backlight are available now, like Dell U2413 and others.

I looked everywhere on my desk, no scree.

Me too....

....though I know where it comes from.....Magnus the Robot Fighter......'scree' is the sound emitted by a robot when Magnus is beating the crap-oil-a out of it ....[note....pun intended]...;)

Yearly eye exam? What's that? Must be one of those things rich people get.

Thought "scree" was the rock fragments at the bottom of a slope, or mountain. Hmmm.

You forgot the part about not slouching.  While it won't directly cause eye strain, it does mean your eye level isn't near the top of the monitor as it should be.

....many Walmarts have eye doctors. Here it costs $40.00 for an eye exam. This is how I found out I had glaucoma.  There are other places that have low cost eye exams. If you mean free, probably not. Nothing is free.
