Preview of new Stardock download store / updater

Preview of new Stardock download store / updater

So with Impulse over to Gamestop and the digital distribution competition no longer something we’re participating in we’ve developed a new digital updating client – Stardock Central (what’s old is new again).

But unlike the old “big” client, the new one is very…very simple.

image

(sorry for the lame screenshot, I’m caught up on my games on this new machine and haven’t installed any apps yet).

Your Stardock purchases will show up here once you login. Just pick what you want to install (or update) and press a button and it’ll use our massively fast CDN to install it (we have a long-term agreement with our CDN except now the only thing using its bandwidth is our stuff so the download speeds are kind of ridiculous – it’s like being the only guy on a 1 gigabyte line).

image

The new settings includes an option to have it simply update your software automatically.  So you can either choose to stick with older versions or always have it up to date.

..

OK, let’s say you don’t like to have to install a client at all.  That’s fine too.  You can update your software and games via the web as well:

image

Pick whether it’s software or games and it’ll look at your account, when you last updated, and off you go.  The installer will figure out what you need to install (i.e. if you have multiple machines with different versions) and off you go.

It’s designed to be as streamlined as possible.

UPDATE: TRY THE LATEST VERSION HERE:

You see....

There's this here tunnel....

....and there's light at the end of it.....

....all that's left to determine is whether the size of the light is defined by it's diameter....

....or its length ....

....or whether it's from sunlight or a train....

Hmmm.. Just renewed my Object Desktop subscription.......???

I knew nothing about this and renewed my subscription to Object Desktop only to find out Impulse/Gamestop is no longer supported, sorry been away, (literally), for awhile.  So does this mean that I have to wait now for this to update both my Object Desktop subscription renewal and subsequently the apps associated with it or do I DL the other apps separately in the meantime through http://download.stardock.com/ ?  Thanks in advance.

You would need to download your apps through the link right now.  When SDC is out you can simply update and install from there.

I hate to be super needy - but will there be some really obvious announcement/email?  This has been rumored and talked about in roughly 5,437 threads over the last five months like a floating dice game.  I don't follow the forums as much as I used to, and I don't want to miss it when it comes out.

Thanks!

When the final version is released I'm sure we'll send out an email or something to notify everyone. That may not be the case for the betas.

??? I'm also looking forward to this new SC. However when it becomes available will the .exe files still be available as they are now?

The exe's will still be availalbe.

In fact, SDC will download those same exes and execute them for you.  Easy-peasy.

So if this new downloader is going to be a while longer, how does one who hasn't already got it get SDC to manage their apps?  I went to a SDC download page but cannot access it.  Clicking the download button takes me to a page where an email address is required.  There are two options, one for new accounts, and a link for retuning customers, but when I click that all I get is a page to update my details and no link from there to SDC.

Yeah, I end up going around in circles, so if you could fix that or post a working link it'd be much appreciated.

The SDC they're referring to is the new downloader.  It's called Stardock Central as well.  The old SDC is no longer functional or available.

SDC is dead, long live SDC (soon)!

Okay, thanks for that tidbit... but I'm easily confused... led astray, for which I blame Jafo [I recall reading he still uses the old SDC for something or other]

Oh well, I'll just have to wait. :)

The final release will be when the release is finally ready to release. I can't say much more than that other than be ready for when the final release is ready to be released.

A notification will be sent out when the release of the final release is ready to be released.

The Steam client will be required for Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion for initial install, updates and Internet multiplayer, regardless of purchase location. You can choose to play in offline mode via the Steam client after initial install, though ICO features and achievements will no longer be available.

If that post is true why create store to sell gaming products if you need steam to install it?

Because Stardock has more than just gaming applications to sell as well as FE which probably won't be Steamworks.
