Hey Everyone,

 

I was reading Doc's recent post on passwords you shouldn't use, when I remembered this tool which calculates how long it would take to crack your password. It's safe to use, it was featured on gizmodo, and if you want to be reassured, read here. Some passwords only take a fraction of a second, and others can take years!

I have passwords ranging from 5 hours to 10 million years.

It's kind of a fun and useful tool to use, post your results if you want to share how good/bad your password is!

Haha never thought of that.........maybe when entering in your password, change a few letters or numbers.

Just tested the strongest password I use

 

It would take

About 700 million years

for a desktop PC to crack your password

Previous Windows logon password: about 32 minutes.
Current Windows logon password (slightly altered): about 6 days.
Ubuntu password: 18 hours.
Wikia password: 3 minutes
Mom's email account password: 7000 years.
Planned Wikia password: 4000000000000 years. (This password will no longer be the planned one).

Regarding the security problem- I'm not too worried about it (although I still change a few key letters in my passwords when I put them in there). The problem with using this thing to harvest passwords is that it has no real way of linking a password with any specific user on the hundreds of thousands (millions? billions??) of web services that require passwords. For instance, if I type in GFM/42%50, how does the service know if that's my Wikia password, Stardock forum password, email password, or something else entirely, and how does it know that it's Scoutdog's and not FredLed's or DrJBHL's forum password. I suppose it could trace your IP, but that would still be of rather limited use...

Not only do they have your password/s ( if entered), remember they also have an IP address to tie that password/s to....A hackers dream if it were that easy!

Alas, the format is more important than the password.

 

If your bank account has a simple password field using ajax verification without even contacting the server inbetween, you're fucked.  If it's a randomized key display you have to click on, with a slow server on the other end, breaking a simple six digit pin will take a very long time.  If they lock out your account after three failures, cracking it isn't on the menu.
