Request for STARDOCK to create X-Com "Spiritual Successor"

I was a little disappointed with the X-COM FPS Announcement. I sure it will be a great game it's own right, though it wasn't the announcement I was hoping for. But since STARDOCK is creating a spiro successor to  Master of Magic, namely, ELEMENTAL, (and it's turning out to be great if you asked me..) is there any chance they could do the same with X-COM? That would rock, and I'd but some cash into it to get that going.

I've got 5 bucks lying around here somewhere........

As has been mentioned by various people, someone like Stardock would be insane to not pick up this baton – there’s a vast and willing audience out there.

It's funny you said that because I had the same thought.  In fact, I wrote (on a different forum):


I am really amazed at the excited reaction to this. When I got the PR, I sort of just shrugged because the PR was surprisingly underwhelming for such a hot franchise; it really didn't say anything interesting. What is more, what it did say made me very sad because there is no proper way to "re-imagine" a classic (I am expecting a cross between Half Life 2 and FEAR). Can't gamers see that this is going to butcher the turn-based heart and soul of a classic game? The only proper way to approach a new XCOM is by "re-imagining" the turn-based genre and making another TB XCOM.

Stardock could do it. In fact, they are the only ones I would trust to try.

I saw a post on....I think it was Rock-Paper-Shotgun, that more or less said the same thing and suggested Stardock take a crack at it. I'd second that idea.

Thank You, THANK YOU, for pointing out that link to Xenonauts. I haven't heard of this one. It looks like it will be very well done judging by their early concept work. It's a small company but they are militant about doing a proper, updated, X-Com successor. Quality assurance seems to e High on their priority list as well.

For me who lost an entire decade of gaming (spent the 90s in the military. Neither time nor opportunity for that), X-Com was some legend. Last year, I finally bought it on Gamersgate and have it now. It works fine on Vista.

Now, I shall be viewed as an heretic but, despite the fine gameplay, I can't seem to play it. I only did a few years and a few missions. That's it: 90's UI and graphics repel me...:'(

 

So I bought some newest clones: The UFO Trilogy.

UFO Aftermath doesn't work on my machine. Probably some bug.

UFO Aftershock was much fun: researching what happened, watch the story unfold, retro-engineering, squad managing with experience and weapons, combat missions with pausable real-time to give orders. There are for sure balancing issues but UI and game mechanisms are good, and the general theme appeals to me. Bloody aliens!! B)

So I'll now try the third: UFO Afterlight (the one on Mars).

I got deterred by the bad reviews on UFO: Extraterrestrials. Is it really so near of the original game?

Though I haven't read it yet, I heard some recent issue of "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" by Alan Moore is just about that: War of the Worlds with Victorian super-heroes. Might be worth reading.

 

Ah, I don't know why I write all that. I don't have those fond memories of yours on X-Com but I like that theme of life or death war against Aliens, with secret organisations, genocides and such.

As a TV-series, I loved [URL=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Skies]Dark Skies[/URL]. Too bad it didn't last more than one season.

And the episode of Masters of Horror named "The Screwfly Solution", I found truly horrible.

 

So, keep the news coming and tell us about new implementations!:drool:

Aliens in fantasy = more humanoid aliens and maybe less than 100% of them are ugly.  Reminds me of Anime.

Honestly, seeing as I consider my-self a "Hard Core X-Com Fan", I thought Extraterrestrials was a pretty good game (once BMan's Mods were added). You NEED BMan's Mods to enjoy the game because they fix a lot of bugs. Also you can install his Mods to fix the bugs and then decide what parts of it you want to "Turn On". This means you can use his updates without using his game-play changes if you don't want to.

I think the reason ET didn't get good reviews or a very good welcome by the X-Com community is because it didn't go far enough. Even though it's a newer game it's graphics look like something out 2002 or 2003, maybe even the late 90's. Also, the only thing it did particularly well was copy X-Com. It didn't add anything new or improve on any areas of the game-play. A true Modern X-Com Remake needs to do Everything the original game does, AND add new features and more depth, not to mention updated graphics and better environments.

They seem to be taking those lessons learned though and applying them to Extraterrestrials2. The new game looks like it's 100 times improved and better then the first one. Xenonauts looks amazing as well. I've already registered on the forums over there and I'm going to be looking into trying to help out as much as I can just as I try to do here. If for some reason I had to spend the rest of my life locked in my room with my PC and they told me I could only take 2 games with me to play until I die of old age, I'd take "Master of Magic" and "X-Com". To me, having grown up on them, those two games more then any others represent gaming perfection.

UFO:ET really is a good game if you have fond memories and nostalgia of the original X-Com games. If you don't have those memories though you probably won't see any of the buried charm the game has and only see that it's buggy with lame graphics for a so called modern game.
