Request for STARDOCK to create X-Com "Spiritual Successor"

I was a little disappointed with the X-COM FPS Announcement. I sure it will be a great game it's own right, though it wasn't the announcement I was hoping for. But since STARDOCK is creating a spiro successor to  Master of Magic, namely, ELEMENTAL, (and it's turning out to be great if you asked me..) is there any chance they could do the same with X-COM? That would rock, and I'd but some cash into it to get that going.

I've got 5 bucks lying around here somewhere........

I think we could use the Elemental engine's mod-friendly nature and create an X-Com mod?

we will need thousands and thousands of people donating 5 bucks.

Possibly. I'd be frank and say that I'm no modder. I can make pretty pics, but that's as far as it goes! :)

It's funny you said that because I had the same thought.  In fact, I wrote (on a different forum):

I am really amazed at the excited reaction to this. When I got the PR, I sort of just shrugged because the PR was surprisingly underwhelming for such a hot franchise; it really didn't say anything interesting. What is more, what it did say made me very sad because there is no proper way to "re-imagine" a classic (I am expecting a cross between Half Life 2 and FEAR). Can't gamers see that this is going to butcher the turn-based heart and soul of a classic game? The only proper way to approach a new XCOM is by "re-imagining" the turn-based genre and making another TB XCOM.

Stardock could do it. In fact, they are the only ones I would trust to try.

Great minds think alike.

This is one of those games, unfortunately, where a remake is inevitably going to piss people off.

If they change too much, people will complain that you've ruined it.

If they don't change enough, people will complain at being charged to buy what is essentially just the same game with prettier graphics.

It's a no win situation.

I don't know, every similar game usually looses a large chunk of what X-Com had.

I doubt anyone would complain if you added door opening, and more tech trees/research, types of mission but kept hte core gameplay exactly the same (I mean no one important would complain obvious some asstard would).

Personally I prefer real time because it allows better combat mechanics like suppressive fire but that dosn't mean it has to be fast paced. Slow and real time. Have you ever played Men of War? Especially Red Tide? That is a very slow tactical real time game with a huge amount of options and its closer to X-Com combat that most of the X-Com clones lol.

Someone is already working on a 'Spiritual Successor' and it seems quite cool: http://xenonauts.com/

There are actually a lot of projects going on which aim on producing a worthy succcessor. But most of them have been under development for ages, and still no final product at the horizon...

this conversation is going on all over the gamernet, and everyone agrees.  Listen to your audience, SD.  Put this in the pipeline.

I think that it should be possible, however it would require hardcore coding skills for sure.

Actually, just today, I was thinking that.. Oh man, how awesome would a fantasy-based X-Com game be?

I actually got a little bit psyched. Same concepts, same mechanics, just a completely different setting. A High Fantasy setting, instead.

I find the FPS just.. This feels like Fallout 3 all over again. There's just no way they can create the same game if they're going to "reimagine" it, so why even bother trying? Can't they create their own IP based around the same concepts? Why even make another "X-Com" game if it has nothing in common with X-Com?

Actually, that second thing would be more than enough for me.

Because we talk about it and that generates attention, its just for free 'interweb buzz' - not much more.

No, no, no. Not at all! I don't think anyone would make the mistake of confusing, say, Baldur's Gate with Jagged Alliance, or Planescape: Torment and X-Com. Just like Fallout and Fallout: Tactics can't be compared in gameplay.

Squad-based tactical combat, in a fantasy setting!

Or even better, a steampunk fantasy setting. I could make a rough draft and have it on your desk by monday!

Steampunk + magic + aliens = mind blown.

I can just imagine a Steampunk styled artillary piece firing shells enchanted with "conjure fire elemental" at an advancing alien foe.

Those are nothing compared to my gunslinger with revolvers, firing magic bullets!

In my rough draft, we're facing interdimensional beings that are trying to subvert the surrounding nations. It all leads to a Cthulhuesque organization in the end.

If they'd blend that into a fine powder, I'd snort it by the kilo.

ChaosConcepts is working on UFO2:Extraterrestrials: http://www.ufo2extraterrestrials.com/

The first one (after it was modded) was probably the closest any recent game has come to the beloved XCOM of auld lang syne.
