If You Don't Want Quitters, Give More Favor to Losers

I've played a couple of games recently and about halfway through all of them I realized that we weren't going to win...the other guys were outlevelling me and were better than I was. I haven't played for a couple of weeks while I waited for the patch to come out and it shows.

Because the game was so one-sided, I was sorely tempted to quit and find a new game with people closer to my skill level. I don't want to leave my teammates but the game is not fun past a certain point. One thing that might make me stick around would be more favor points awarded at the end of the game. Right now I am very bad at the game and at the end of the game I am only awarded 10 favor points. That's not worth sticking around for...

Give more favor to the losers. Even 30 points would be a nice improvement and at least gets me 300 points every 10 games. Otherwise, I think I am going to start quitting out and finding games that I can win. I want to buy a favor item at some point, after all...and personally I think it's kind of crap that you're better than me, so your award is a cool item that increases your advantage over me even more! At least give me a chance at earning these items and getting more than a pittance of favor for being matched with people outside of my skill level.

i doubt this would help much.  once people get the favor item they want there's not much other use for favor points unless they're ocd and have to get everything.

yeah, I agree with Kisan. but the idea of rewarding the stayers instead of punishing the leavers is an idea that shouldn't be disregarded. Kind of like Stardock's DRM stance. Reward the customers instead of punish the pirates. sort of?

As for me, I'm banning all rage quitters when the ban list comes out.  Then they will not be able to get into as many games hopefully changing their behavior.

 

However, it is no fun staying in a game when you are going to lose, but it shows good sportsmanship and class sticking it out.  Maybe a reward would be needed. 

 

Better option would be to have a public record of games played, won, lost, quit, and disconnected, like in Sins of a Solar Empire.  This would work well in custom as quitters could easily be identified and people nowadays care about their records.

I agree. From a completely armoral, self-interested point of view, since a winner can get up to 20x a loser, it makes sense to cut your loses. To maximize favor points per hour, you can afford to quit a half dozen games partway through as long as you end up getting a really high favor point total on the one you stay in and win.

 

Now, anyone who does the above is an asshole, but I think it's important to set rewards systems to reward good behavior along with hoping people with do the right thing for the right reason.

 

Edit: It's also important not to result to drastic efforts like ban lists for a simple disconnect that happens once. That's dickish behavior on the part of the remaining players. I BSODed out of a match last night which in no way is a common occurence, and any punishment for a driver malfunction or whatever it was would be ludicrous. If someone can't stay connected at all, that'd be one thing, but it's important to realize sometimes your computer crashes or your cat catches on fire or whatever.

See this is what so many people don't get. The best way to get people doing what you want, is to convince them it's in their benefit. Do it in a nice way and they will follow along happily rather than fight against it (the ban way).

Seriously, do this. Infact, why stop there?  Why not give MOAR favor points to the losers, to help them cope with being noobs.

Rewarding good play and making general nubness costly is a thing of the past.  Wtf Stardock, get with the program.

Just put a real ladder in the game and it won't matter.  Play arranged teams and nobody will quit anymore, and when they do quit you'll be glad because it means you won.  I played competatively in WC3 for a long time, and having somebody quit when I was beating them was just as gratifying as winning.

 

The problem is the lack of competition, or any reason whatsoever to stay in a game where you're losing.

Ingame favor (which you intertwine with Rank favor) is horribly bugged right now. The favor you get at the end of the game is Rank favor which will be added to your total as an indication of your Rank in the charts. Here is a link: http://pantheon.demigodthegame.com/rankings/overall/ I think this chart is bugged or 'unfair' because some people played over 3000 minutes and are outranked by people who played just 200 minutes for example.

Edit: to get Ingame favor you need achievements like 'Kill 10 demigods' or 'Get to lvl 20' or Do 750.000 damage in a single game'.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the correct answer.

Giving the losing team extra kudos for losing strikes me as an attempt to swat at symptoms instead of the actual problem.  If me quitting doesn't simply end the game with a victory for my opponent and, instead, wastes his/her time with bots and such, then, well, that's stupid (for lack of a better word).  If someone's not having fun getting ravaged, 30 points instead of 10 isn't going to make them stick around.  Heck, many people probably don't even care about favor. 

The problem is that a quit just creates a hassle for the winners and is meaningless record-wise to the losers and 'that' needs to change.

You are so angry at everything Chaosnaska. You need to have a couple beers and relax or something.

 

The idea is the winners get rewarded more, but that losers get something worthwhile for their participation. This is a game, being played for fun, so yeah, it is cool when everyone gets some favor points during the process.

While I don't really think adjusting favor will be effective, I think the winning bonus for favor could easily go. It's too large by itself to begin with and the winning side usually gets most of the other rewards as well. It would also slow down the favor gain in general, which I consider a good thing personally.
