Pirates are kind of pointless.

Remember what they used to be?

When i got the game, about a year ago, the pirate were a lot more of a pain. In fact, everyone was using them to inflict damage, they were pretty though and with high bounty, they could raze your planets. A few patch later, they are so nerfed a few planetary defenses can wipe them out on their own. I really hope they will get some love soon, they are just a minor annoyance as they are.

Try this Mod

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/335474

The Pirates are not for the Faint of Heart.

And dont even try to take down their base without a full fledged fleet.

I know its a mod not game fix but hopefully it will tie you over until this is fixed.

I just wished they changed "pirates" for something that would make some more sense in the setting of "Sins". Somehow, the fact that a bunch of pirates can mount a massive attack on well established interstellar empires doesn't cut it for me. Dunno, a rebellious faction, a marauding alien race, anything but pirates. Not that pirates wouldn't exist in space, but they would most likely be just be a threat to trade, not to the survival of the empires themselves.

Totaly agree with that. pirate CANT take over an empire. i would love to see more pirate factions with more or less power

so u can choose pirate faction A will atk B cuz i know the PF A is closer and/or powerfull etc.

Or even better. u can ''buy'' their services for good as a Mercenary army as long as u keep paying X% of ur income.

Hey dreaming never killed any1 ;P

The thing I find most redicolous is that the pirates are suicidal in their attacks and fight to the last ship, yet the AI empires retreat all the time.

How can Pirates who are just miserable criminals be braver fighters then the military forces of AI empires?! Not even mercanaries act like that.

If the pirates are getting lots of love in the next expansion I hope that diplomacy, culture & AI will get some attention too.

"Pirate love" was mentioned as being a (small) part of the diplomacy/culture micro-expansion. So yes, it will.^_^

Also, I'd assume the A.I. would get an overhaul to deal with all the new options, so there'd be some love for that too. (computers need love and understanding as much as the rest of us. :inlove: )

I think of StarCraft single player where the dumb AI was made a bit interesting because it would rush you. This made it necessary to fine tune your buildout.

In Sins, the AI is not going to rush you the way it is set up. So, the pirates were put in to make single players pay attention to their buildout.

Forcing a reasonable buildout is all they are for IMHO. So, like in Civ IV, the barbarians and pirates should become non factors at some point. Suddenly they just become heavily defended non-aggressive neutral worlds, perhaps with goodies for whoever conquers them first.

Hey dreaming never killed any1

unless you were dreaming while driving a car... or dreaming of your girlfriend when you are with your wife....

but hey, forget i said anything... :X

but i do like your ideas, maybe making pirates more sneaky... attacking a recently colonised planet with poor defenses etc, rather than the closest planet... i was playing a map with pirates and simply fortified a nearby planet with mines, gauss, SC and a starbase, the pirates just kept getting their asses handed to them... if i wanted to lvl up a Cap ship quicky, id put him in there for a bit and lvl six VERY quickly... never really had to rebuildany defenses either... did make pirates quite boring though, i even let them attack me on purpose, just for the EXP

Instead of bidding on someone else, you should be able to bid on yourself. The winner of the bid could choose where to send the Pirates. This would give a better level of control; choosing the enemy of your choice and which planet to attack.

i like the idea of control, telling them where to attack, but the bidding on yourself thing, maybe that would work with mercenaries, but not with pirates methinks.... maybe add it in, pirates could be a more diversionary force, more hassling than dangerous, and while the enemy is distracted, send in the much more dangerous mercenaries to sabotage the fleet, or wipe out a planet, or whatever...

makes sense, mercenaries would be better trained, better equipped.... maybe we could even pitch mercenaries against pirates... pirates have more numbers but mercenaries are better equipped and effective. would mean that if you win both of them, you should be feared, but if you only win one you need to guess where to deploy your particular faction, either counter the other faction, defend a weak spot in your empire, or attack the enemy empire...

i have to say i really like this idea of pirates and mercenaries.

now that im thinking about it, why do pirates attack an empire with bounty? because they have to work for their pay... however, the pirates keep all the money put in the bid against all empires... does not make sense, they are getting money for nothing, i really think that that should be changed... only the highest amont of bounty should remain when the pirates launch.

only the highest amont of bounty should remain when the pirates launch.

The only problem I see with this is say (extreme example) two players go in a bidding war and the end results are 10,000 cr to 10,250 cr.  Suddenly the winning player is out 10,250 cr while the loser gets back 10,000 cr...

And remember, bounty doesn't just work for the pirates.  You can collect it too (as long as you didn't place it).  So it'd be an incentive to attack a certain player if there's high bounty on him.
