So I downloaded GalCiv2

and now I want to know...

I'm one of those evil people who got this game from BT. Now - I'm seriously considering shelling out for a serial number for a few reasons.

1) I like how Stardock is a small company with a great game, and its obvious that this game was created by passionate people in a non-corporate, money-grabbing kind of company

2) I think I want the updates, patches etc and I'm okay paying for this game

Now - I'm curious if somebody could tell me where I should buy a serial number for GalCiv2 now that I already have it, and also, where can I find the details of the updates? What will change in my game when I decide to update Galciv2 with a valid serial number? Tech Tree costs, build costs, buy costs, racial differences? anything?

Just purchase and download the game via Impulse. You will receive a valid serial number and be able to use Impulse to download the updates. There are a number of improvements that have been made with successive updates.

Tech Tree costs, build costs, buy costs, racial differences? anything?
End of quote

From DL to DA, Impulse Drive is increased in cost from 100 to 400.  From DA to TA, both Impulse Drive II and Impulse Drive III are increased from 200 and 300 respectively to 400.  Nano Recorders, unlocked from Sensors III, is reduced in cost from 540 in DL/DA to 100 in TA.  From DL to DA, Xeno Entertainment is reduced from 500 to 300, Extreme Entertainment is increased from 1000 to 1200, Zero G Sports Arenas is increased from 2500 to 3500, and Virtual Reality Centers are increased from 4500 to 5500.

From DA to TA, weapons trees are decreased from 49k beam, nearly 76k missile, and 67k mass driver to max them, to sub-25k for everything in every tree and in some cases as low as 17k.  TA 2.x introduces a mechanism that increases the actual cost of weapons (and defense) techs by 50%, which brings this number to sub-35k effective and as low as 25k effective.

Probably irrelevant for you, as I expect you're already on DA, but engine sizes and costs increase from DL to DA as follows:

-HyperDrive: 6+10% to 9+20%, 5 to 30
-HyperDrive Plus: 5+10% to 8+17%, 6 to
-Ion Drive: 4+9% to 6+14%, 7 to 20
-Impulse Drive: 7+8% to 10+24%, 8 to 50
-Impulse Drive II: 5+7% to 8+22%, 9 to 50
-Impulse Drive III: 4+6% to 6+18%, 12 to 50
-Warp Drive: 6+6% to 9+24%, 15 to 80
-Warp Drive II: 5+6% to 7+22%, 17 to 80
-Warp Drive III: 4+6% to 6+20%, 18 to 80
-Warp Drive IV: 3+6% to 5+18%, 18 to 80
-Warp Drive V: 4+6% to 8+23%, 10 to 100
-Hyperwarp: 3+5% to 6+20%, 10 to 100
-Hyperwarp II: 4+5% to 5+16%, 10 to 120
-Hyperwarp III: 5+5% to 5+18%, 10 to 140

Focus is reduced in TA to 80% of its former output-that is, 20% of focus is transferred, but 25% is still lost.

There are plenty of other changes, but without knowing what version you're on and what version you're going to it's difficult to give you relevant information, as is noted above.

Sorry - I have Ultimate Edition so I guess I'm up to ToA.

I was curious more in updates - patches - etc moreso than expansions. But I do appreciate the detail in your answer!

So...you want to know what future changes will happen to the game?

I'm not psychic.

2.x made some minor changes to TA, including combining the espionage systems of DL+DA, and backports the espionage upgrade to DA.  2.x also fixes a rounding bug in mil/social production in DA.  2.x also changes the TA tech capital to be a functional planetary racial bonus rather than a straight multiplier.

There's also the option to choose your frequency of 1) random events (not sure if this is just mega or not) and 2) extreme worlds in TA 2.x, however at present they appear to be linked, as people have reported having no events with events set to high and extreme planets set to rare.

No I dont want to know what's coming out next week.

I want to know what sorts of updates/patches etc you miss out on if you dont enter a valid serial number. Is there a patch-notes page somewhere that shows me what bugs have been fixed etc since the release of GalCiv2 Ultimate ed?

Thanks,

If UE came with 2.02 for ToA, then you have the most up to date version right now, thus SS's comment about predicting the future.

Whats coming in the next patch?  Um, let me think of known bugs that they confirmed will be fixed in the next version:

-Passive spies being lost if the race ceases to exist

-<insert game breaking bug that shal not be named>

And possibly some others that I'm not aware of.
