Pathetic Cry (for help)

So, some PC stuff.

I read a claim here that the Spore Creature Creator Demo has SecuROM on it, which does an ET when you're connected to the internet. There have been problems with this in the past, mostly from Starforce published games. My response is...

So?

The thing runs fine on my laptop, even though it is a bit slow. Major kudos to EA/Maxis for doing that. I couldn't care if it phones home, because, simply, there's no money in it. EA won't give any personal info away, becuase what can it do? Spam is probably the worst - I doubt Will Wright wants to raid your bank account, or Joe Hoggs in Accounting is going to do an ID theft, they get buckets (relatively for Joe) already. Any worries are, IMO, completely unfounded. EA's gonna sell our details to the Mafia or something? Puh-leaze. There's no money, and no incentive, apart from spam, and I don't check my email anyway.

And besides, how do you know? I'm quoting from a blog here. The guy at the other end could be spreading malicious rumours, playing a prank, whatever. I don't really mean that - I'm going to say that Erathoniel's a nice, trustworthy guy who would faint in shock at the prospect of lying, although I don't know him. But simply put, is a blog really a #1 source of info? A #1 source of unfiltered, sometimes hilarious opinions, yes, but for trusworthy info, nope. Sorry, Erathoniel, but no boycotty for EA for me. I love Spore, and damn the consequences.

Speaking of which, has Spore got into any trouble being released in the Bible Belt in the USA? Y'know, where the gay-hating fundamentals live? (I'll get to you in another article.) The game "teaches" about evolution and "playing God" in a sense so loose it gets drunk and has a one-night-stand every night, so they'll certaintly jump on that. Any news, America?

And speaking of making games work, I need help from the rich PC snobs. Yes, a cry of help from a Console Gamer. Why am I putting them into caps? They're not seperate species or anything. Silly me.

So, time for a song to sum up my intention. :-D

Yoo-hoo-hoo,
I wanna be like you-oo-oo,
I wanna walk like you,
Talk like you,
Do-oo-oo,
etc. etc.

Yes, I want to migrate. I want to play PC games without a framerate of -9. I want to play Half-Life 2, damn it, but it won't work. It must be a crime for any PC gamer to not play Half-Life 2. Every month or two I puy PC Gamer UK and stare enviously at the glossy pages, waiting for the guys to jump out the pages and help me finally enjoy my bundles of joy gathering dust on a shelf, but it never happens, no matter how many drugs I take. All I do is taste colours. Colours of disapointment.

I have a hilarious allowance which I won't disclose, but even with that and the equal amount my brother gets, I don't think I can afford a decent PC that plays games by the end of the year, which is when all the crazy games that were having a crafty fag out back run back in, ready to display themselves for Christmas. Birthdays and said Christmas does not hold hopeful, as retail Gaming PC's will often have cut-price graphics cards to make them cheaper. I have a groundwork with PC Gamer's PC building guide every month or so, the most recent being the one in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. preview issue, but getting the parts is a huge jump away. All I need is a PC that runs The Orange Box nicely, and possibly Sins and Gal Civ 2 as well. Internet is another story for another time.

Please give support + encouragement, tips, etc. Don't bother listing keyboard, mouse, moniter and speakers, as I already have those. All prices in the GB of P (Great British Pounds, for the unsutble).

Here's an idea...

Stop sitting around playing games waiting for your allowance and get a job. :)

Yes, this is your mother.  ;)

You lie, my mother doesn't have a blog.

Oh, and I'm 15. I'm pretty sure child labour is illegal in the UK. Am I missing something?

At least here in Finland, you can get a job delivering papers or something at that age. Anyway you can get a semi-decent desktop without a monitor for 300€, and you can propably get something better second-hand. If you can get a temporary job, it shouldn't be that hard to get that kind of money.

Good luck ;)

UK prices are pretty damn high for PC parts. Minimum good spec you're looking at is around 450GBP.

you can't work if you're 15 in the U.K.? ever heard of mowing lawns<

mowing lawns? by 15 I had a part time job at a bike shop, and bought my own extras..

Ok, how is you choosing to get a job child labor. Here in America, i got a job when i was 15(i'm currently 16 and still have that same job) and i love it. It's not child labor because i chose to get that job. So, yeah, go get a job if you need cash. Just pick something that you wanna do.

Get a couple of paper rounds or something. I depise that fact that, as a 37 year old with two kids, I am about to use this phrase, but "when I was your age" I delivered two free local newspapers. Made about 20 quid a week. Six months of that, $80 a month, will score you a fair old rig. I have a six year old Dell here that only has a graphics card upgrade (GeForce 6) and half a gig of ram, and it runs Half-Life 2 just fine.

As for Securom, storm in a teacup. A lot of folk who whine about DRM don't truly understand what DRM really means and how long it's been being used. If EA were using Starforce, I would NOT be buying it AT ALL. Securom is the much lesser of two evils. I'm more concerned with stuff like the activation in Mass Effect. (Though from what I've read they're dumping that now due to consumer uproar.)

Oh, and I'm 15.

That explains why I could hardly understand anything that was said - it was a complete ramble from one topic to another with to structure.
The best I got was

1) Does anyone care about DRM
2) Has anyone campaigned against SPORE? I am interested in people who don't like it based on their creationism views.
3) What computer should I build since I want to play PC games

Am I close???

Spot on, my friend. I did say PC stuff at the top. And let me ramble, o.k.? I don't want someone I don't know telling me what to do.

Nobody is telling you what to do... rather, giving advice as to how you can realise your dreams sooner...

When I was 15, I had a paper round; mowed lawns and did whatever odd jobs I could get to earn extra money for things I wanted... and during school holidays I worked for my father and uncle as a plasterers labourer 5 days a week. Bloody hard work, yes, but I wouldn't trade those days for anything...

Oh, and the allowance... I didn't get one! What I got was earned off my own back. My parents would pay me for contributions/efforts to the family, etc... which was fair because nobody got something for nothing and everyone benefited. ;)

Then why ask questions here? No one knows you!

I didn't tell anyone anything - I just asked if I had managed to summarise your 1/2 page of rambling into a few key points??? :)

Me neither.

Man, posts like this make me feel old, and I'm a freakin' babe wrapped in swaddling clothes at this point still. (Yes, that was a Messianic reference to myself. I don't know what to make of it yet.)

Kids these days are convinced they can enter the real world in their late 20's and retire before 40.
I guess we all have dreamed about this but sadly today's kids, expect it, they don't dream... They can't, they have been neutralized by meds.  ;p

My eight year old came up to me last month.  She says: "Dad, I need some money."

In my mind I'm pretty upset.  My wife and I don't use credit and we've tried to instill in our kids that hard work reaps success . . and here I am about to go off on my beautiful daughter because somewhere I have failed.  I'm really more upset with myself.

She continues, "So are there any chores I can do around the house to earn it?"

I took her out for ice-cream before I found some work for her.

  1. I understand and support DRM as long as it doesn't interfere with honest folks using software
  2. Spore is a game . . games are not real.  There are more immediate concerns about games topics and functionality that who made the world.
  3. Nutella on bread is yummy
  4. Make a list of what you want your PC to do (play) and find one that can do it.  Set a budget to get that

Yup... you can blame do-gooder lobbyists and government for that. If they're not telling parents that they have no parental rights and/or responsibilities any more, they're instilling far too much expectation in modern-day kids so they think everything is a right rather than a privilege... that there's no effort or responsibility attached to acquiring anything they want. :(

"I don't want someone I don't know telling me what to do"...
lol.. and then he'll grow up, find out the government who he doesn't know, will tell him how he has to pay his taxes, where he can/can't go,what rules he has to abide by,how much he has to pay for certain items, what medical care he is entitled to,...hmm should I go on?

In real life kid, you have alot of people you don't know telling you what to do.

and just to be more specific regarding the comment you read that prompted that comment you made,
it was a suggestion. Suggestions can be acted upon or not, you actually have a choice.

When I was 15 there were probably less than a dozen computers in the entire country.

....yes...we DID have electricity by then....;p

aha ha ha ha ha ha! 'kids these days' classic line, also for the reckord its just full-time employement you cant do before 16, part time is fine.

one more thing i just turned 16 and i dont think im rambling and incoherent, i might overuse sub-clauses, but im not incoherent.

My oldest does the same. She has music she want to buy she says "Are there any chores I can do". Makes me feel good. I did something right.
